Historic Maplelawn Garden in Westboro, Ottawa, ON Canada is rare example of an English walled garden. It is a property listed as a National Heritage Site since 1989. It is also 1 of the many garden sites in Ottawa which are part of the Tulip Festival.
.
The manor house on the property was constructed in early 19th century for lumber baron & farmer William Thomson. The dwelling was built between 1831-1834 in the British classical tradition. The walled garden, oval driveway & the house form the original pattern of the grounds. But the land he owned went all the way to the river & extended west a bit. In the beginning the garden was planted as kitchen garden. They grew tender fruit, vegetables & flowers near the house for which a British country walled garden is known for. It transitioned to an ornamental lush perennial garden in the 1940’s.
.
It is cared for by the group “Friends of Maplelawn” a volunteer group who study, maintain, preserve, & rehabilitate the garden. They especially care for the old growth peonies which the garden became famous & still thrive there.
.
The manor house also holds heritage status & is now the home of The Keg restaurant in Westboro. Be sure to go early so U will have time to visit the garden either prior to or after dinner B4 the sun goes down. The garden is open dawn to dusk.

A quote from Dr Royce Mahawatte, our Representation & Inclusion Research Director, in response to Parliament debating a petition yesterday (signed by 140,000 people) to make ‘non-binary’ a legally recognised gender identity here in the UK.

The legal recognition of non-binary gender identity was a recommendation that we made in our report on Representation and Inclusion in the fashion industry, published back in July 2021.

Here our data showed that:
🧡 Gender variance and fluidity have an impact on fashion and vice versa
🧡 Legal recognition would afford opportunities and protections
🧡 This would only benefit both the industry and society more broadly
