The ‘O’ Ring Table.

In machinery, the O-ring is small and almost invisible, used as a seal, compressed between two surfaces to contain fluid or gas. Here it does something else.

Four compressed nitrile O-rings hold the table's aluminium legs to its top. Each leg is turned and grooved to a precise tolerance. When the top is set down, it sits on the shoulder of each leg, and the rings, held under pressure between the two surfaces, grip firmly enough that the whole table can be lifted and moved without the legs sliding out. 65 kg of aluminium, held by four O-rings.

Once assembled the O-ring is hidden from view. It remains the piece that brings the table into form.

This piece is part of @slot_adw curated by @bronwynmarshall at @marshallstudio_ during @adelaidedesignweek. Open Friday and Saturday, 10am to 4pm at @sodaobjects

A familiar face to some of our regulars — Milo, third generation at Beilby’s.

He’s been testing the furniture since he was little, and these days he also takes his Saturday showroom duties pretty seriously, helping customers find the right fit.

For us, keeping Australian manufacturing alive means making furniture properly, supporting local skills, and building something worth passing on.

Hopefully, one day, all of this will be his.

Here’s another look at the Slate Sofa System. Visually simple once finished, which is always a good sign, because it definitely wasn’t the easiest thing to build.

It’s layered and built around a strong horizontal rhythm, with the upholstery doing a lot of the visual work. Get in touch for product enquiries.
