🐅 Nothing I say will capture the joy I felt at @barconventber this week. Surrounded by passionate industry colleagues, dear friends, and the biggest cheerleaders - I could not ask for more.

After 2 weeks on the road, I am broken but so happy and above all, grateful.

A couple days ago I mentioned an annual release is always get excited for.
This is another one I look forward to every year.
The @laphroaig Cairdeas release. Almost always a cask strength version of Laphroaig and most times, using interesting casks or methods.
The most recent we have seen here is last years 2025 version which took the often lauded Lore bottling and gave it a cask strength treatment. I love the original Lore so i was super excited about this one. While the age of the components of the Cairdeas version may be younger than the original, the added abv is a great touch and the overall flavours just hit the right way. We reviewed this on one of the first episodes of the Last Call Whisky Podcast and it rated very high with all 3 of us becoming a must buy.

One release i look forward to day in day out is the Polaris Series from @twostackswhiskey
The series showcases the very best parts of Irish Whiskey, whether its the grains, processes, casks and history, there is always something unique to find in each of the releases.
This one is the latest and its full of history and dual unique cask influence.
It consists of a historic mash bill of 40% unmalted barley, 30% malted barley, 15% oats, and 15% wheat. Bottled at 52.5% ABV, it underwent a dual maturation in Planteray Barbados Rum and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.
I am always hesitant with rum casks used in any kind of whiskey but the addition of PX here tames down the rum and they balance each other out very nicely. Everything in this whiskey is working off the balance concept I feel. There is sweetness and spice, thick oily mouthfeel but easily moreish, and tropical fruits alongside the dark red fruits from the two casks.
Two Stacks with yet another absolute beauty here.

What do you get when you take 80s distillate North British and put it into a sherry hogshead for 24 years and then bottle it at a cask strength of 56.3% abv....?
You get one of the finest sherry bomb single grains that I have ever tasted.
So good that I spent a couple years or so trying to track down a second one. And with only 136 bottles ever produced, getting my hands on a second was very lucky.
Oh did I mention the colour of this one....

Some rules are made to be broken.
I have heard it so many times...in comments, at live tastings, in chats, in written articles and reviews...grain whisky needs to be really old before it becomes good.
Well I can firmly state that just isnt true. Don't get me wrong, old aged grain whisky are usually pretty famn good and can be special but I always say the same goes for any kind of whisky.
Thankfully the beauties over @singlecasknation dont abide by unwritten rules and will release a whisky when they deem it fit to be released. Hence this 9 year old Girvan had their label and I can confirm that this whisky is awesome.
Matured in a refill bourbon barrel and then finished for 11 months in a first-fill bourbon hogshead before being bottled at a hefty 59.3% abv. this whisky exudes confidence and flavour.
The world wasnt shaped by rule followers anyways...

I want to know what is one distillery you would bring back from the dead if you could.
For me, there is no doubt that I would pick Cambus!
There are infinite reasons to hate Diageo, but the closing if the greatest grain distillery prematurely might go down as one of the worst decisions they have made.
This 25 year old from @berrybrosruddspirits is a perfect example. Distilled in 1991 and aged to perfection for 25 years, this is grain whisky as grain whisky should be. Cask strength of 57.1% abv. which is a magic number for proof.
This is oodles of tropical fruit salad with a healthy drenching of vanilla cream and slow oozing honey strewn about. There is a hint of that grain funk that shows through on the second or third sip and rounds this one out in a dastardly way that just makes you want another sip.
Now. What's your distillery you want brought back into this world...

Another day...another example of an Indy Macallan being so much more for so much less than the Distillery releases.
This time its a 16 year old, from 2nd fill PX casks and first fill oloroso butts, bottled at a whopping 62.9% abv.
All of the above i can pretty much guarantee uou will never see from a distillery release. But tha kfully @smwscanada had this very whisky in their August outturn, and even luckier still am I that I was able to snag one.
This whisky caught my attention when sipped blind among the others. Deep rich sherry flavours bursting out, with the abv needing some taming. After sitting in the glass for a bit, the complexity and robust flavours start to truly show. Dare I say that even a couple drops of water actually helped this onr as well. What a whisky! Something that I have never said about a distillery release.

What're your favorite cask types?
I love a good solid used red wine barrel and one of my favorite red wine barrels (and red to sip) is Amarone.
Amarone is a dry-ish rich, full bodied, red wine made in Italy that usually has earthy, tobacco, dark red fruits, and sweet spice notes. Pair that with a distillate that can handle the influence well and boom. Great whisky.
Take this one for example.
A 29 year old Cambus by @vintagemaltwhisky through their Cooper's Choice line. Matured in American oak and then finished in an Amarone wine cask, before being bottled at a beautiful cask strength of 46.2% abv.
This whisky blew me away from the time I first sipped it and is the perfect balance of great single grain distillate with a solid maturation and exquisite finishing.
