Questlove sat down with director and composer John Carpenter in Hollywood to discuss Cathedral, a graphic novel and heavy metal album inspired by a single dream. Carpenter tells how a bongo lesson from his father led to the iconic Halloween theme. He also talks about casting Kurt Russell after their Elvis TV movie, why The Thing was his hardest shoot, and says The Exorcist remains the scariest movie ever made.

Along the way, @johncarpenterofficial turns the tables and interviews @questlove , sparking a lively debate about The Beatles and whether music has reached “creative diminished returns.” It’s a funny, engaging conversation between two directors who work in different worlds but share a love of making music.

For Your Grammy Consideration: John Carpenter’s Cathedral.

Best Contemporary Instrumental Album
Best Recording Package

Born from a nightmare, Cathedral summons listeners into a hallucinatory world of dread and darkness. Unfolding as a series of episodes tied to an abandoned church, Carpenter’s heaviest and most ominous work yet is the score to the movie in his mind.

I’ve loved John Carpenter films since I was a kid - Escape from NY, The Thing, They Live, Halloween, all time greats - but it wasn’t till I was a bit older that I realized he scored his own soundtracks and is a true synth pioneer.

He’s the type of artist I admire, one who follows his own muse and I’m always interested in exploring the art he is creates. Since 2012 he has been penning comic books via his company Storm King Comics and recently released Cathedral, an original supernatural-horror graphic novel paired with a new soundtrack he composed to accompany.

I just got my copy of the graphic novel and vinyl and I’m excited to dig in!

He is a true innovator, drop a comment with your favorite John Carpenter movie, comic or soundtrack and let’s celebrate his artistry and contribution. A true legend 🙌❤️🔥

I had to miss NYCC this year, meaning I had to miss my yearly tradition of stopping by the @stormkingcomics booth, restocking on horror graphic novels, and chatting all things horror with the awesome people there. Truly, more than all the amazing guests and booths I didn't get to see, I missed stopping by Storm King. So I drew them all a little comic about the online order I'm about to place for myself. 😂 Hope you all had a great NYCC!! Panel one: me dreaming about Storm King comics at NYCC. Panel 2: me typing on a laptop. Bottom Panel, full width of page: me cheering as my giant Storm King order arrives addressed to "Katy (that nerd who visits every year)"
