Hoe een onverwachte vondst op zolder kan resulteren in een reconstructie van 40 jaar concertbezoek, met vandaag aflevering 11:

Voor mijn veertigste verjaardag werd ik door goede vrienden Eric en @brunhildewijlaars hier mee naartoe genomen. Het verpletterende doorbraakalbum Heal was die zomer uitgekomen en dat leek hen wel iets dat in mijn straatje paste. Midden in de roos: #TimothyShowalter maakte er bovendien een overrompelende, emotionele achtbaan van.

Een herinnering uit het digitale tijdperk, dus helaas geen kaartje meer van voor handen. Wel nam ik die avond zonder het te beseffen de gelimiteerde uitgaven (300 stuks elk) van de albums Pope Killdragon en Dark Shores mee naar huis. Die waren vooraf gegaan aan Heal, de aanleiding voor deze tour. Al koester ik achteraf meer de herinnering aan de innige omhelzing met Showalter, die plots van het podium afdook en voor mijn neus belandde. Een jaar na Frozen kwamen de warme knuffels niet voor rekening van Olaf de sneeuwpop, maar van Timothy de legendariër!

I went to see Strand of Oaks at the Goshen Theater tonight. It was a wonderful show, and he used my 1964 Fender Super Reverb amp for the performance.

So tender. So melancholic. So painfully beautiful.

Oblivion Hymns finds @hammockband turning some of our most fragile emotions into music. Guitars, strings, piano and voices come together in songs that can feel enormous one moment and incredibly intimate the next. Even at its saddest, the album never loses its warmth, making these songs feel like somewhere you want to remain a little longer.

One of the most beautiful things about this record is how naturally everything grows. A simple melody can slowly become overwhelming, a distant voice can suddenly bring light into the darkness, and even the gentlest moments can carry an incredible emotional weight. Nothing feels wasted. Every layer seems to bring you a little closer to the heart of the record.

And beneath all that beauty, there is loss. Absence. Memory. The difficult act of letting go. Yet Oblivion Hymns never feels consumed by its sadness. Somehow, Hammock turn all of it into something comforting, reminding us that melancholy can hold warmth too.
