ON THE HARLEM RIVER RAIL TRAIL—

It was a bright and sunny day in the Hudson Valley yesterday, and I spent it outside visiting friends as well as some nostalgic places. In our first summer here we stayed in nearby Copake, which is known for its popular and beautiful lake, and driving around the area reminded me of the luck we had been 25 years ago to find this place, our little paradise. Or as we often call it: The Shire.

At one point I went inside for a beer at @roejanbrewingco. We had a big hang there years ago, which I organized with @strictly.tudisco. To return there on my own had the vibe of returning to high school and expecting to find your old friends still there. It was a sweet and bittersweet feeling to miss the big crew we had previously assembled.

Afterwards, just as I did with the folks who had come for our hang, I walked along the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, taking in the gentle sounds of falling leaves and animals skittering about getting ready for cooler days ahead. I wasn’t listening to music, but the scene brought to mind some piano music that you might recognize and which I share here with this post.

On the trail for about 90 minutes I only met four people. Two who zipped by me on bikes gave me a quick wave. A short time later two older women walked by and asked me what I was taking pictures of. It was then that I realized I hadn’t taken any yet, as I had been mostly just enjoying the quiet. As they walked away I heard them speaking softly and sinking more deeply into the intimacy of their friendship. I wished I had asked them to let me take their picture. Then I snapped the shots you see here.

A RE-BOOT FOR MY #9075 MOCS—

How was your weekend? Did you march, or did you watch the parade passing by? I had a very important event to attend Saturday: my father in law, surely the kindest and most loving man I know, turned 90, and we had a big party for him. It was very well attended and he was overjoyed to be surrounded by so many of the people he cares about so deeply. I ate much too much cake and too many cookies, but it was a heart-warming reminder that that the most important way to show your greatness as a human being is to show your goodness.

Speaking of greatness—expert segue, no?—I want to give another proper shout out to @sleepyredwolf and his @redwingeggharbor shop for the superlative job they did re-soling my #rw9075 Mocs. Jonathan works with a local Red Wing authorized shoe repair place, which is why if you look at the traction tred crepe outsole (picture 3) you’ll see the Red Wing logo. I went with the classic Taslan laces, which pop so nicely again the black leather.

There are people who think black boots don’t show their age as well as brown and other colors, and while that’s true in ways, the functionality of black boots—they match so much of my wardrobe—make them an essential for my collection. Freshly cleaned up and resoled, the very worn leather is more comfortable than ever. If you’re wondering about a resole, send Jonathan a DM and I am sure he will offer the best advice and service.

This is my third pair of Red Wings to be resoled. My signature Huntsman boots are actually in at the company’s HQ in Minnesota being resoled right now (I sent them in when they photographed some of the boots in my collection). Can’t wait to see the results. Tagging a few fellow Red Wing wearers here, including my buddy @connermjack who is running the RW store in Stockholm. Nice to have so many RW experts and enthusiasts in my circle! Such an iconic American brand.

FILTERED 877s—

Still wrestling with all the dials and menus on my new @fujifilmx_us X100VI camera. God forbid I should read the manual from beginning to end! 😆

I have always been a bit of a technophobe, but little by little I am being more comfortable experimenting with different settings. Accidentally discovered the “advanced” filters button on one of the menus and tried them all out on my @redwingheritage #877s. Andy Warhol wouldn’t have been impressed, but I had some fun. I think I liked the Toy Camera setting best (Pic 4). Last shot in the spread is without any of the filters.

All of the filters brought out the textures of the rug in our bedroom. As I mentioned before, this run is made of shirt leather strips. Not sure if @crateandbarrel still sells it, but it’s an unusual item and it definitely matches the industrial we were going for.

Hope you’re all hanging in after a roller-coaster previous week. There is some seriously weird shit going on, and I think the new normal—for better and worse—won’t be normal at all. 🤪

THE POWER OF OUR LOVE—

So my other half had a tripod that he loaned me, so I disappeared the other night into our laundry room, where we also have some gym equipment, and attempted another self portrait. I only realized after I had put my gear away that I didn’t have the aperture on the automatic setting, but the pictures turned out reasonably well if unremarkable. Still, I am learning lots and it is enormous fun. I can understand why people get totally swept away by photography as a hobby. So many variables to tweak!

What’s your wish for Christmas this year? We’re only a few days away and I don’t want for any material thing. Of course we all want peace on earth, that most elusive of gifts, but what can we strive for to make it possible to get there?

In this world very few things happen on their own. We have to play an active role in shaping the world around us. We need to prioritize the well-being of others as an essential task of our existence. We must fully commit to loving our neighbors like ourselves and not leave those beautiful words hanging in the ether. A better world is attainable if we are bold enough to imagine one and persistent enough to work for it. The obstacles maybe be plentiful, but the power of our love is infinite.

Wishing everyone a splendid couple of holiday weeks ahead— a very Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it and a New Year for all full of joyous possibility. ❤️

POSTCARD FROM TRAVERSE CITY—

When my buddy Rob @strictly.tudisco told me that he and his then fiancé Emily @little.silent.one were moving from nearby Hillsdale, New York in the Hudson Valley to Traverse City, Michigan, I will admit to being kinda sad. We had already gotten into a lovely groove of seeing each other on weekends and enjoying the occasional hike or trip to a vintage store. They introduced me to the joy of @zinniasdinette—amazing fried chicken sandwich!—and helped me organize a rather memorable denim hang at @roejanbrewingco.

But clearly they have fallen in love with their new home, married now and blessed with their first child on the way, and I couldn’t be happier for them. I asked Rob, who you’ve seen a few times in my feed, to tell us a bit about their new hometown, and here’s what he told me:

“Traverse City is a really special place, so special in fact that I almost don’t want to write about it. They call it a city, but it’s more like a big small town. It’s got a charming downtown with small shops, restaurants, and bars (and surprisingly good pizza!) Just a few minutes walk from downtown and you’re right on Grand Traverse Bay, which feeds directly into Lake Michigan. Just outside the city you’ll find smaller lakes, rivers and massive sand dunes.

“That’s all great, but I think what has made Traverse City really special is its people. Moving to a new place, I didn’t know what to expect. But over the past 18 months I have met some of the most welcoming, loving, and genuinely kind people I’ve met in my life. They have made me feel at home in a place I never knew.

“More to come on establishing a denim scene here…”

RED WING 875 VS 877: WHICH TO CHOOSE?

Since current events have spiraled into the absurd and incomprehensible, I turn my attention to a less controversial discussion: whether someone should buy a six-inch model #875 or eight-inch model #877 moctoe boot from @redwingheritage. It’s an easy answer: either or both! 😂

I happen to have both models because I already owned a pair of 877s and found a very lightly used pair of 875s on line for a steal and decided to complete the set. I don’t think there’s a more iconic heritage-style workbook than either of these beauties. The expertly oiled Oro Legacy leather ages beautifully, each scuff and mark adding character to its unique not-quite-orange color. The crepe soles don’t give the greatest traction on icy or very slippery surfaces, but they also don’t hold onto the mud, which is why they are so great for yard work.

As for the height, I found the breaking in process easier on the taller mocs. The shorter mocs tend to rub my ankles when they are new, but I didn’t have that problem with the 877s. The extra height also means more support if that’s something you’re looking for. But the 875s are easier to lace up and if you’re mostly looking to make a heritage fashion statement, they will do the trick just fine.

My 875s are darker now and closer to needing a resole, but both models are comfortable as can be. The shoe experts out there, some tagged here, can go further into the deeper details and history of these boots, but I would heartily recommend either of them as an essential staple in your “rugged style” wardrobe.

NEW CHUCKS, AND WHY I MAY SOON NEED TWO CAPTIONS PER POST—

I may soon need two captions for each post: one lighthearted and fun, the other completely freaking out about how scary America’s political system has become.

For the lighthearted one today, I have new @converse Chucks! I had a pair of black Chucks, but I have grown to love the the more padded #ct70 model. This is now my third pair, along with parchment white and sunflower. Black puts me in touch with my Italian greaser roots, and putting these on conjured up many nostalgic vibes. If I had a broom handle and a Spalding I’d play stickball. Swing! Whoosh!

The rest of this modest fit is all from @leftfieldnyc. This slubby tee has texture for days, and I have lived in these smokestack jeans since I picked them up in May. The lighter weight denim and wider cut makes them extra comfortable for warmer summer weather, whether I am wearing sneakers or boots. I think they look awesome with these classic Chucks.

My alternative caption would ask the question what in the actual hell was the Supreme Court thinking when it put Presidents above the law with their ruling yesterday saying holders of that office had immunity for their “official acts?” I was having trouble falling asleep last night thinking of the implications. It is horrifying. It is illogical. It is dangerous. It is anti-democratic and un-American to put anyone above the law. Or at least I thought it was. But it happened here in my lifetime and I am shocked and disgusted. The American people deserve better, or at least they had better rouse themselves to do something about what is happening.

Sorry about the contrasting vibes here. Trying to cope and make sense of things has become a bit of a challenge. Tomorrow I will try to return to my regularly scheduled programming! I know: good luck what that! 😂
