What happens to the stories we carry when migration changes the shape of a family?

In this powerful episode of Cross Continental Converations our host Alexandria Miller from Strictly Podcasts speaks with Grenadian filmmaker, producer and creative industries strategist Meschida Philip about migration, separation, memory, and the stories Caribbean film has the power to hold.

From the experience of “barrel children” to Meschida’s documentary work, the conversation explores how film can become an archive for the experiences Caribbean families have often struggled to name, and how filmmakers can tell these stories with care, purpose, and cultural specificity.

The conversation also looks beyond the screen to the Caribbean film industry, including the need for stronger financing, distribution, and co-production pathways connecting creators across the Global South.

In our latest episode from Cross Continental Conversations, host Alexandria Miller (@strictlyfactspod) sits down with Grenadian filmmaker, producer, and strategist Meschida Philip (@meschidaphilip) to unpack the lasting costs of migration on Caribbean families.

Meschida shares the inspiration behind her powerful documentary Scars of Our Mother’s Dreams (Featured clip graphics sourced directly from the trailer for Scars of Our Mother’s Dreams) and explores the "barrel child" phenomenon, where parents migrate for economic opportunity, leaving children behind in the care of relatives.

Together, they dive into the emotional weight of long-distance separation, the complexities of family reunification, and why visual storytelling is essential for healing collective trauma.

Born on the plantations of what was once the Dutch-colonized region of Berbice, Guyana 🇬🇾, a creole would emerge, known to its speakers as Di Lanshi (the language) and later academically as BDC: Berbice Dutch Creole.

What made this Creole special is that around 38% of its lexicon was drawn directly from the eastern Ijaw dialects—mainly Kalabari, with 57% drawn from Dutch, around 1% from Lokono Arawak (the Indigenous people of Berbice), and the rest from Creolese (Anglo-Guyanese Creole) or other possible African languages. This made it an anomaly compared to other Creoles, whose African language lexicon is smaller and less concentrated in one language cluster. Such a significant connection suggests that a large number of the enslaved Africans in that region were Ijaw speakers, which is notable considering that the Ijaw were not a major group recorded among the victims of the transatlantic slave trade.
By the time the Dutch colony was ceded to the British, the speakers of this Creole would mainly be the Bovianders: people of mixed descent, primarily comprising enslaved African and native Lokono ancestry, with traces of Dutch settlers from the former colony. As BDC speakers became more integrated with anglophone communities and their Creole became associated with backwardness, the language declined as more people began speaking Creolese and Standard English.

However, thanks to the efforts of linguists, notably Dr. Ian Robertson and Silvia Kouwenberg, the grammar and lexicon of the language were documented, as they conducted fieldwork and collected the oral histories of the last speakers. While this language ultimately became extinct, their work and that of other scholars, helped preserve the history and the link between Berbice and the Ijaw
