Muscle becomes even more important
“One thing I think former athletes should never underestimate is maintaining muscle.”
As athletes, we spend years building physical capacity.

But when structured training disappears, it’s very easy for strength and muscle mass to gradually decline.

Maintaining muscle isn’t just about looking athletic.

Muscle is important for movement, strength, physical independence and glucose disposal.

So strength training shouldn’t necessarily finish when your sporting career does.

It just needs to evolve.
3 practical takeaways
• Keep resistance training in your week.
• Train the major movement patterns.
• Progress gradually rather than trying to recreate your professional training programme.

“You spent years training your body for your sport. What are you doing now to train it for the rest of your life?”

“If you’re a former athlete and you’ve noticed changes since your sporting career ended, start by understanding where you are now rather than assuming it’s simply ageing.” #health #muscle #strength #metabolichealth #healthylifestyle

Here’s a simple Squat & Lunge Combo.
I completed x3 sets of these, each set had a different hold position.
1: Zercher - Sandbag sits in the crease of the elbow.
- Isometric for the arms, front loaded mass, targets Arms/Core/Legs.
2: Clutch - Sandbag offset to one side with 1-arm wrapped around with a squeeze-style isometric hold.
- Creates a bigger challenge for the core to resist lateral flexion.
3: Handles - Sandbag shifts position from a clean to a straight arm rotational reach.
- Creates a power element for the clean, & demands more of balance to control rotation on reverse lunge.
Sandbags…1 piece of kit, endless variety. Lift, shift, swing, hold, throw, drag.

Average 82 kg → 75kg 💪⚽️

I’ve reached a weight I haven’t seen since I was a professional footballer in my early 20s.

79kg → 75kg. (New weightlifting category)

But for me, this isn’t really about the number on the scales.

It’s about understanding my body better, being curious about what was actually happening inside it, and making better decisions.

The journey started with a CGM from Glucose Evolution.

A food diary tells you what you ate.

A watch can tell you how you slept.

But neither can tell you what your body was doing at 3am after a hard training session.

A CGM can give you that insight.

It allowed me to see how my glucose responded to different foods, training sessions, recovery and different parts of my day. Research is increasingly exploring CGM use in people without diabetes to understand individual post-meal glucose responses and metabolic health. (PubMed)

From there, I’ve combined that information with consistent weightlifting training, nutrition and the support of the Feel Great System from Unicity.

And the results have surprised me.

Over the last 6 months:

📉 82kg → 75kg
🏋️ +11kg on my weightlifting total
⚽️ Continuing to train and perform
🧠 Learning more about my own metabolic response

For me, one of the most interesting parts of this journey has been understanding glycation.

Glycation is a natural process where sugars can bind to proteins and other molecules. When this process is excessive, advanced glycation end products (AGEs) can accumulate and are associated with ageing and a number of chronic health conditions. (PubMed)

So this isn’t simply about getting lighter.

It’s about long-term health, performance and understanding what’s happening beneath the surface.

I’m still learning, still testing, still training and still asking questions.

Because sometimes the biggest changes start with simply being curious enough to measure.

4kg lighter.
11kg stronger.
And a much better understanding of my body.

This is only the beginning. 💪

Our players of the week for round 7

Build the man a statue!🗽Mark Lines steered the 1s to a 15-run win over Slough in a top of the table clash. After winning the toss and deciding to bat, 49-4 didn’t look a great return on investment. However, with Lines at the crease, runs started to accumulate as the testing pitch started to flatten out (to a degree). His well-made 50 and out was essential to posting 151 ao, a competitive total. Wickets were shared around between the bowlers (except Kai ‘Hulk’ Ziemkendorf, who may need a new match shirt) with Lines picking up a cheeky two-fer. Shoutout to Shiv for running someone out going for a 3rd 🏰

The 2s fell to a frustrating defeat against Wokingham. After a decent bowling performance, with wickets shared between Woolley, Masood, L Ziemkendorf(2-9 off 6!), Page and Dixon, our reply got off to a bad start with a wicket in the first over. Then 55-2 became 80-5. Another fifty partnership followed between Dixon and Uzair, but once Dixon fell for a well-made 73 the innings folded in on itself.

The 3s benefited from university term ending with Dhruv Sharma’s return to Windsor. Trig’s wicket first ball of the game set the tone and all the bowlers chipped in. Highlight of the innings was Brooker dropping his own hattrick, meaning he could only teapot himself. Chasing 152, the 3s were optimistic; less so when Charters was dismissed for 1, but Sharma and Fox shared a 94 run partnership to whittle down the bulk of the chase. Some hearty blows from Brooker helped settle any nerves and the 3s recorded their 2nd win of the campaign

The 4s had a tough day out but James Perkins shone with bat and ball. 38-1 to 117 ao says it all, and it would’ve been a lot less without late order hitting from Perkins. Despite his 2 wickets up top the 4s never really had enough runs to defend.

So I got a reply from a prospective client who was interested in training with me, saying that she found a “less expensive option.” 🙄 How would you suggest I respond? 🤔

There are so many factors involved in personal training that prospective clients never realize: the most important being education and extensive experience throughout different age groups, levels and rehabbing injuries. It amazes me how people (especially those with physical injuries and issues who want specific customized training) use price alone to determine the best fit for their health. 🤦‍♀️

🔐 So here’s a little FREE wisdom for your Wednesday, with ONE IMPORTANT MOVE to incorporate into your next training session. @flexvit.band

⤵️⤵️⤵️
We always hear about muscles flexing and extending, contracting and releasing, holding and bracing, but rarely do we talk about the movement of circumduction. ⭕️

Circumduction is the circular combination of shoulder movements that combines flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction so that the hand traces a circle and the arm traces a cone.

Benefits of Training Shoulder Circumduction:
* Improves shoulder stability.
* Enhances core strength.
* Improves range of motion.
* Improves coordination and muscular control.
* Supports shoulder health and joint mobility.
* Athletic performance: Enables powerful motions in sports that involve throwing, dunking, swinging, and swimming.
* Daily activities: Facilitates broad arm movements and reaching in various tasks.
* Core & stability: Improves core strength and shoulder stability through coordinated muscle engagement.
* Restoring range of motion: Used in physical therapy (e.g., shoulder or hip) to regain range of motion and functional strength after an injury, stroke or other physical activity.

💪Give this move a try using a medium resistance band (I am using @flexvit.band) and tell me where you feel it. It’s definitely worth the price 💰 and your body will thank you 😊
