[Book] Greenhouse Stories. A Critical Re-examination of Transparent Microcosms Onomatopee – NL, 2023 • The projects we are currently presenting within CO-LAB (curated by @siegriddemyttenaere for @designfestgent) are part of a larger, long-term investigation into greenhouses. In 2023, we were able to crystallise some of this research into a publication released with @onomatopeenet and graphic design by @structurebatons that brings together a constellation of perspectives on these transparent structures. Greenhouse Stories is the first publication to approach greenhouses not as objects of architectural admiration or technological innovation, but as controversial tools of (agri)cultural production that participated in questionable processes of vegetal displacement, colonial appropriation, domestication and pollution. Bringing together contributions by philosophers, growers, anthropologists, activists, scientists, historians and artists, the book re-examines greenhouses from social, historical, environmental and creative perspectives. Its essays and interviews reveal the multilayered identities of these instruments of containment, while also considering the possibilities they hold: from spaces of women’s empowerment to sites for socially engaged and eco-conscious practices. Greenhouse Stories is available through Onomatopee >> https://www.onomatopee.net/exhibition/greenhouses-stories/#publication_22963 • Editors: d-o-t-s (Laura Drouet / Olivier Lacrouts) Authors & contributors: Luis Berríos-Negrón, @gibsonprue, @_monicagagliano_, Michael Marder, Kate Teltscher, Penny Sparke, Adriana Craciun, @simonlenskens, @tea.laurent, Joanna Moreno Michels, @natalyaayers, @pyrusbotanicals, @coltrane_mcdowell, Ken Walczak, @charlenemflores, @lestroisparcelles, @claireratinon, @we_are_dots Graphic design: Structure Bâtons Publisher: Onomatopee — The book was realised by d-o-t-s on the occasion of the eponymous multifaceted project they developed as part of the artistic programme ‘loop — down the hills, across the land’, conceived by @anna_loporcaro for @gemengsuessem x Esch2022 – European Capital of Culture. • Photos: 1 © Onomatopee / 2–8 © d-o-t-s

[Exhibition] CO-LAB x Design Fest Gent Design Museum Gent, Belgium 03.10.2026—11.04.2027 Curation: Siegrid Demyttenaere • As part of the CO-LAB exhibition curated by @siegriddemyttenaere in the frame of @designfestgent, we’re happy to present Des mots sur des serres, a project commissioned in 2021 from graphic designers @structurebatons. The project looks at greenhouses as spaces of empowerment for women. In the 18th and 19th centuries, in Europe, outdoor gardening was largely considered a man’s discipline, while botany and domestic gardening were among the accomplishments wealthy young women were encouraged to master. Confined to their homes, many women found in gardening a form of knowledge, and agency. In 2021, we invited Structure Bâtons to revisit this history using Every Lady’s Guide To Her Own Greenhouse, Hothouse, and Conservatory – a gardening essay published anonymously in England in 1851 – as a starting point. Describing the greenhouse as an antidote to boredom, its author celebrates the freedom of “being mistress of [her] own greenhouse,” as one can “do as [she] pleases” and “there is nobody to question [her] judgement, nor condemn [her] acts.” Developed through a mail exchange with female gardeners from around the world, Structure Bâtons’s project consists of embroidered textile banners that transform the words and experiences of contributors into visual repositories of memories, impressions, and reflections on freedom, resilience, transmission, love, and death. Evoking the protest banners (often made of textile) used by women’s rights activists in the 19th century, the banners underline how the simple act of gardening is still considered an empowering act of resistance around the world. — Des mots sur des serres was realised on the occasion of Greenhouse Stories, a multifaceted project developed by d-o-t-s as part of the artistic programme ‘loop — down the hills, across the land’, conceived by @anna_loporcaro for @gemengsuessem on the occasion of Esch2022 – European Capital of Culture. • For more information about the CO-LAB exhibition >> https://designmuseumgent.be/en/programme/co-lab Photos © Olly Cruise

[Exhibition] CO-LAB x Design Fest Gent Design Museum Gent, Belgium 03.10.2026—11.04.2027 Curation: Siegrid Demyttenaere • We’re happy to share our participation in CO-LAB, a collaborative exhibition curated by @siegriddemyttenaere as part of @designfestgent, on the occasion of the grand reopening of @designmuseumgent on October 2, 2026. Set across eight historic period rooms in Hotel De Coninck, CO-LAB explores design not as a finished object, but as an ongoing process shaped through collaboration, dialogue, and collective making. The exhibition gives us the opportunity to present to a wider public two collaborations developed between 2021 and 2022 with the designer duos @dach.zephir and @structurebatons. Both emerged from our extended inquiry into the history and identity of greenhouses as controversial agri-cultural tools, and explore two contrasting meanings and uses they have acquired over time: on the one hand, instruments of colonial expansion and extraction; on the other, spaces of autonomy, knowledge-sharing, and empowerment for women. Originating from commissions we initiated around historical artefacts and writings, the two collaborations approach these tensions through textiles, objects, and forms of collective storytelling. — Both collaborations were realised on the occasion of Greenhouse Stories, a multifaceted project developed by d-o-t-s as part of the artistic programme ‘loop — down the hills, across the land’, conceived by @anna_loporcaro for @gemengsuessem on the occasion of Esch2022 – European Capital of Culture. • For more information about the CO-LAB exhibition >> https://designmuseumgent.be/en/programme/co-lab Image: Every Pixel Has A Supply Chain © Victor Verhelst x Yufei Gao

Book of the Week In the former kitchen —now library space— of Van Abbehuis, we are currently housing the temporary bookshop 𝘈 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳. Each week, we highlight one of the books available in the space. This week’s pick: Freinet Techniques by Paul Gangloff (ed.) “Since the first experiments, when Célestin Freinet brought movable type and a printing press into his classroom in 1924, thousands of school magazines were written, typeset and printed by children who were learning to read and write with what would be called the ‘Freinet techniques.’ Besides the development of skills, making these magazines also gave form to a visual language spreading an enthusiasm for a new, emancipatory vision on education through an international network of schools.” The result of a long-term research project by Paul Gangloff, this carefully designed and edited book brings together hundreds of reproductions from these school magazines, accompanied by essays from graphic designer César Roger and artist-researcher Marie Preston. Their contributions explore the connections between Freinet’s pedagogical approach and contemporary practices of graphic design, literacy, and co-creation. 🌑🌒🌓🌔🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑 _ Date anniversaire !

We want to thank everyone for listening and supporting what we do. Grateful to work with artists involved in our releases. It’s been a tough year, many days it feels like the world’s moral compass is broken. We’ve been getting through it day by day, leaning on music and compassion, to keep us going. We hope that some of the records we released this year brought you a bit of peace. The same way making them helped us. We are off till the first week of February. When we come back with have some great releases to announce, all happening before summer ’26. Very sick stuff. We wish you the best for the new year. ❤️
