Some gardens seem to grow out of the very soul of the person who makes them.
At Andrew Salter’s Barn Garden at the foot of the Kent Downs, a little black barn sits at the heart of a world created from one man’s love of plants and his desire to live amongst them.
A narrow deck wraps around the house, the planting wraps around the deck, and beyond it an enveloping meadow opens into the wider landscape. Andrew describes the planting as being ‘like a moat’.
There is something origami-like about the way the garden folds around the house, opening and rearranging itself as you move through it, layer upon layer, revealing different planting combinations at every turn.
From the deck, you feel submerged in plants; from the meadow, the little barn seems to float in a sea of flowers and grasses.
And at the centre of it all is the gardener himself, quietly conducting this abundance of colour, texture, form and movement.
It is a garden of such individual character, and one that seems to reveal something new with every few steps.

Photographed during the garden’s open day last Saturday, on what felt like the final day of the Eternal Summer of 2026, in the happy company of @stuartcharlestowner.
With big thanks to @big_drewland for sharing his wonderful creation.

Of course, I took a million plant pictures so I’ll share some more in another post…

Fantastic week celebrating our 30th anniversary in the last few days, including a gathering at the wonderful 78 St James’s St roof garden, designed, built and tended by the Bowles & Wyer team. A very special event – particular thanks to Alexander Morris of BentallGreenOak for hosting us.

We saw so many friends, longstanding and more recent, and look forward to the next 30years. Thanks to @paul_upward_photography for the beautiful pictures.

A recent pilot course organised and delivered by us to Peter Ashley Activity Centre staff, volunteers, and UOP students was an excellent example of reconnecting local communities with traditional craft skills and learning about hands-on heritage asset maintenance. Thank you Stuart for wonderful drone footage #heritageskills #heritagemaintenance #limemortar

And so ends another weekend, a rather spur of the moment and impromptu one in Brighton with one of my besties @callumdcksn 💛 Sushi was consumed in large quantities, far too much drink was drunk, 63,000 steps were walked and danced into the wee hours including finding a new favourite bar 🍻🎼🎤 @barbroadway_brighton 🙌🏻🕺🏻💃🏻 I must admit I’d forgotten how much I truly love the city 💛 #brighton #bestfriends #soulmates #barbroadwaybrighton #weekendvibes #escapism #citylife #brightonpier #sushi #brightonpavilion
