Quick trip to the Queen City to celebrate Queen Mother—the woman who taught me so much, especially what love is. Because I’ve known her for 40+ years, we’re on a first name basis. But on special occasions, I call her mom.

Great to be home for about 24 hours to celebrate Pat on [pre] Mother’s Day. We, her children, call her blessed. Deon’s not here, but I called her blessed for him, too.

I might not be the oldest, but I’m definitely the tallest.

I almost never do this.

Before the sun came out to play today, I was listening to music that I wrote, recorded, produced, and released several years ago. Although both songs have lyrics, Adoration (2017) and You Are Welcome (2018) are instrumentals that I truly enjoyed listening to in the stillness of the morning. It has been years since I heard these songs. But as I learned during the summer of 2000 while I was a counselor at Camp Joharie and playing the piano in the dark—also early in the morning—music isn’t only my gift to others, but it’s also my gift to myself. Every single day, I’m grateful.

21 years ago.

There is so much that I can say about Friday, July 11, 2003. More importantly, there are so many amazing people that I can thank for their support of the first cantata that I wrote and produced. This year, however, I’ll share this: you can do all the things.

In July 2003, I had just finished my first year of graduate school. And why does this matter? Even 21 years ago (and before that), I’ve always done multiple things at the same time. In the early stages of pursuing a PhD in school psychology, I was also writing and arranging music. In fact, throughout my undergraduate and graduate career, including the first 8 years of being a school psychologist, I served as a musician and director of music for several churches. Although I don’t play nearly as much as I used to, I’m still doing multiple things—teaching, writing, practicing school psychology—at the same time. I truly don’t think that I can pick one thing to do or do one thing at a time; and I don’t intend to—at least not anytime soon. As I do today, two decades ago, I always did what I enjoyed doing. I hope the same for you, too.

One day, but not today, I’ll do something like this again. ✌🏿😊

Twenty. Years. Ago.

There’s so much that I can say about July 11, 2003. But even 20 years later, I remember this night as one of the most special of my life—largely because of who was a part of it and worked tirelessly to make it happen. And 20 years later, I’m still grateful for their support.

As I consider where I am today, and what I’m doing, be encouraged with these truths.

1. Everyone has to start somewhere.

2. Never, ever, look down on humble beginnings.

3. Always remember those who believed in you and helped your dreams become reality. More than anything else, their faith in you is the ultimate confidence builder.
