Revisiting moments from LABOUR's @studio.labour performance 'soft thought' 🫧 A newly commissioned performance by Berlin-based artist duo LABOUR (Farahnaz Hatam & Colin Hacklander) took place at KW during the Kyiv Biennial’s @kyivbiennial closing weekend and as part of Berlin Art Week @berlinartweek. The performance unfolded throughout KW’s entire building, from the attic and stairwells to the exhibition spaces. Percussion, spatialised sound, ecstatic dance, intimate conversations, moving image, and live acts emerged, dissolved, and reconfigured across the evening. Thank you to everyone who joined us! ____________________ #kwinstituteforcontemporaryart #kwberlin #artinberlin #contemporaryart #berlinartweek Images: LABOUR, 'soft thought' performance at KW Institute for Contemporary Art as part of the Kyiv Biennial Live Program, Berlin 2026. This art week I had two adjustments: didnt drink and avoided the parties. That made the difference, I actually was able to receive art. Stil body is sour:working everyday and hard arthoeing. Grateful for the reunion of all this amazing people. I was touched by the way how Miriam Kongstad moves in space with a big smile, catching everyone. is not acting, she is fully there giving 1000%. we loved the builtup, it didnt feel too long or too short. Also moved by Deva Schubert vocal collisions. The gesture of the movements of the performances, snesual and painful, the choir voices penetrated until the deeps insides of the skin. It reminded me to another moment of the art week, years ago, where i was suddenly involved in. The eco of our bodies in the performances. Remember? Special mention to Black Power Naps performance at Liturgy for the tired body in Medizinischer museum, because it was the most different, so fresh. Built from poetry ready to challenge our hearts, and songs to transform. Yes, they point a topic that i also work with (reclaiming rest in the arts as resistance), but what moved me was the humour, the generosity and freedom around it. They did it with professionality & elegance but also they dont take themselves that serious, which is something the artworld is missing too often Credi 1,3,4: Deva Schubert, vocal collisions 2 me by @mamba_maramba 5, 6, 7: Miriam Kongstad, Hard Play & @delablanca 8: @traacca and @chicoblanco 9 Alexandra in our @boroscollection afterwork 10 piece of our team foto 11: AI made us medieval 12 Culinary gesture by @chelseaturowsky_ 13: @las_artfoundation & @tatiaumiel 14 Black Power Naps @bmmcharite 15 Kris Huba,Softpower 16 HKW biennale São Paulo 17 Wu Tang at Isabella Bortolozzi 18 Lorena & Cosima at Barbara Wien, Andreas Eriksson 19 @studio.labour at @kwinstitutefcontemporaryart curated by @lopecado 20 @miagap_ opening at @galerieklemms A personal highlight was giving a tour in the Boros Collection to people I admire like @pablo.alama @ttrraaccaa, @chicoblancochicoblanco & the mum of Salim Green. With Berlin Art Week 2026 kicking off this Wednesday, September 9, a generous selection of events are taking place across the city. At Pickle Bar, Filipka Rutkowska presents ‘The Iron Lipstick’ where the queered spectre of Margaret Thatcher performs reanimated versions of her iconic speeches that call for the abolition of gender, despite the politician’s anti-gay politics. Openness, possibility and relational fluidity also take form in the performance ‘soft thought’ by LABOUR at KW as part of the Kyiv Biennial. In this piece, increasingly fractured political and social tensions are tended to by exploring listening as a way of inhabiting uncertainty together. The four-hour piece has no fixed beginning or end, remaining in continuous flux, as percussion, spatialized sound, ecstatic dance, intimate conversations, moving image, and live acts emerge, dissolve, and reconfigure throughout the evening. Episode 18 of “if the house could speak” features a program curated by LABOUR — the Berlin-based sonic duo of Farahnaz Hatam and Colin Hacklander — gathering six (!) of their own recent works. Since 2018, @studio.labour has been creating immersive “sonic activations”. These performances transform architectural spaces into active, acoustic environments. They map out both the central rooms and interstitial spaces of a building by combining digital sound synthesis, acoustic instruments, and unamplified sounds. The audience is invited to physically move through the space, led by sound from one location to the next. The opening piece for this episode, “sonic activation, villa aurora”, was created by LABOUR during their residency at Villa Aurora in 2021–2022. Transforming the house into an instrument using digital sound synthesis, psychoacoustics, the local pipe organ, and live kamancheh, they are able to draw connections though space and time connecting both the past and future of Villa Aurora.   sonic activation: villa aurora (2022)

LABOUR create work based on sound and its relation to space. The name LABOUR is inspired in part by an early definition by Marx that gives ontological significance to the realm of work, as articulated by the philosopher Christopher J.
