Friday, Selected. / 002

Five new tracks that caught our attention this week. From hazy electronics to heavier guitars, there’s a little room for everything.

Find something you love. Pass it on.

@melopoeia.studio

Saskia - Wearing All White Like an Angel

An intimate closer built around the changing ways we see the people we love. Strings from Peter Gregson bring another layer of feeling to a track written with several different people in mind.

@saskiamusicc

untitled (halo) - Sex

Crunchy breakbeats, synth sirens and vocals that drift through the noise. That strange feeling of leaving a rave while the world outside is already waking up.

@untitledhalo

Arno Sacco - Apathy

A response to betrayal with anger beneath the restraint. Small production details give the vocal space, before saxophone and the sound of waves arrive towards the end.

@arnosacco

studio20 - Penny Drop

Shared vocals and contrasting synth textures shape this Midwest-emo-inspired debut. A song about the moment it sinks in that someone is gone for good.

@studio20.archive

Clara Mann - Oblivion

Delicate vocals and wistful strings meet the uncertainty of love. Lightness in the sound, weight in the feeling. A gentle place to finish this week’s five.

@claramannn

What a first release. “Penny Drop” is a fascinating debut; the combination of sounds feels properly fresh, and it grabbed my attention almost immediately.

The two vocals add loads of character - Kate’s is soft and very high, while Isaac’s sits much lower before becoming increasingly strained and emotional as he starts shouting towards the end. The structure keeps shifting underneath all of that too, which makes the whole thing feel unpredictable in a really satisfying way.

studio20 have made something genuinely different here, and I really want to hear where they go next.

@troyesivan has long been one of the most likeable and constant pop forces. But it is perhaps only now, with his excellent, eclectic fourth album, She’s the Best, that he cements himself in the genre’s highest echelon. Emotionally piercing, sonically exciting, and conceptually vast, it’s a real coming-of-age for one of music’s good guys.

Speaking of which, @jamiet – the man behind some of British indie’s most undeniable tracks from the past 20 years – returns with his stunning, stadium-ready sixth album. Also returning is girl in red (or is it @girlinblue now?), the beloved Norwegian, who turns her red upside down with the daringly anthemic new single, “blue”.

Now representing: studio20

Kent four-piece studio20 have released their first single ‘Penny Drop’ via Communion. The group’s visceral live performances, finding them moving between coruscating alt-rock, lean mid-western emo and twinkling electronics, have solidified them as one of the most exciting emerging bands in the UK. ‘Penny Drop’ is an intense search for resolution that highlights studio20’s curveball approach to songwriting.

The band play The Greyhound in Peckham on 27 October before supporting Robber Robber on their UK/EU tour.

NEW SHOW • Still buzzing after a brilliant Fly The Nest down at @thegreyhound.uk last night we couldn’t wait to announce our October lineup.

This month’s residency sees three acts take to the stage in Peckham.

@jacksonroymusic’s sound is aptly described by @thelineofbestfit as like “covering grandiose arrangements of a bygone era but with a rock band setup”, exciting newcomers @vim.wav offer up atmospheric, experimental electronica while @studio20.archive will bring angsty emo instrumentation and pop-rock hooks.

As always, RSVP for a free ticket on @dicefm , entry is permitted on a first-come-first-served basis.

The Greyhound serves pizza on the patio throughout the night, as well as £6 margaritas till 9pm!

Come early. Stay late.
