Currently on view, solo exhibition ‘LABEUR’ at Kapel Rozenkrans @koksijde_oostduinkerke until the 30th of august. With works of Constantin Meunier and George Minne. » “For its first participation at Art Paris, STUDIO23 (Ghent) is bringing together two Belgian artists who both explore the fragile connections between identity and landscape. Shifting between earthly gravity and spiritual detachment, the works of Johan Tahon works open up a new space, a place where visitors can experience the unfinished and the incomplete and, in so doing, perhaps find themselves. In parallel, Joren Van Acker turns his gaze towards the world of the oceans, which becomes a mental and symbolic horizon. His deep black charcoal drawings consider the infinite ocean as a place of both orientation and loss, of control and abandon.” 🖋️ Marc Donnadieu 🖼️ STUDIO23 (@studio23gent) 1. Preview Art Rotterdam: Johan Tahon — @STUDIO23gent will present a group exhibition at Art Rotterdam (27–29 March at Rotterdam Ahoy), featuring, among others, work by Johan Tahon. From an early age, the artist discovered that pain could be a powerful driving force and that objects could bring a certain lightness to the weight of existence. This insight forms the basis of the quiet melancholy in his fragmented sculptures, which evoke a profound sense of recognition and reflect on the human condition and the essence of being. He prefers working with plaster for its aesthetic qualities, its quick handling and, as he himself emphasises, its pleasant scent. At the same time, he frequently experiments with other materials and combinations, such as polyester, bronze and ceramics finished with a silvery platinum glaze. His sculptures are unmistakably contemporary, yet they also echo classical visual traditions from Egypt, Africa, ancient Greece, Asia and Byzantium. Artists such as Giacometti, Beuys and Rodin remain important sources of inspiration for his intuitive practice. After studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, his career gained momentum when Jan Hoet, then director of SMAK, invited him to participate in the reopening exhibition of the renovated museum. Today his work is part of leading collections, including those of SMAK, M HKA, the Stedelijk Museum, Kunstmuseum The Hague, FMAC in Paris and the Dutch Royal Collection. Tahon’s work will also be on view during Art Rotterdam in Sculpture Park, presented by Galerie Gerhard Hofland.

Became a bit transfixed by Femme piquée par un serpent (Woman Bitten by a Snake) by the French sculptor Auguste Clésinger. It was considered a bit scandalous upon its first exhibition, its depiction of the female form a bit too visceral to the viewers at the salon of 1847. I immediately wanted to paint it, but the hows and whys sook a spell to figure out. Also currently showing in at Studio 23 in Belgium. .
