Perched above Inkwell Beach, the iconic Dragonfly House watches it all 🌊✨

Built in the late 1800s and thoughtfully reimagined into the show-stopping beauty we admire today, this home is more than just a head-turner along the seawall in Oak Bluffs—it’s a living piece of history. Each shingle, each line, each golden-hour glow tells a story of legacy, resilience, and presence on Martha’s Vineyard.

Long before its current form, the home was owned by First Lt. John Ritchie—an American Union Army officer and Civil War diarist whose writings became one of the principal records of the Massachusetts 54th Infantry Regiment, preserving the stories of Black soldiers when they might have otherwise been lost.

From the early 1950s through the mid-1990s, the Dragonfly House lived another chapter as Eastman’s by the Sea—one of the first waterfront homes in Oak Bluffs listed in the Green Book. During the Jim Crow era, it stood as a place of refuge and welcome for Black travelers, becoming one of the longest-running safe havens of its kind.

Now formally recognized as part of the African American Heritage Trail, the Dragonfly House carries all of that history forward—quietly, powerfully—just steps from the shoreline.

As you stroll by, it’s hard not to pause… to take it in… to feel the weight and wonder of what it represents.

⚠️ A gentle reminder: this is a private residence, not a museum. Please admire respectfully from a distance.

🏡 Also worth noting: this home isn’t for sale—it’s simply a beautiful home with a deeply rooted history, one that should be appreciated, and admired.
