Ikebana | Tea Ceremony

An invitation to slow down and experience the quiet dialogue between flowers and tea. Led by Serena Sensei, founder of Studio Seren and a certified First Grade Ikebana Instructor trained at the historic Ikenobo School in Kyoto, two ikebana demonstrations explore the philosophy of Kadō (the Way of Flowers), celebrating seasonality, balance, and the beauty of empty space.

The experience is accompanied by a Chinese tea ceremony by Siyuan Meng, whose practice is rooted in tea as a contemplative ritual, inviting presence through attentive brewing, refined tea, and shared presence. Together, flowers and tea become a meditation on stillness—an opportunity to pause, observe, and reconnect with the rhythms of nature.

Served with three seasonal teas and a seasonal dessert, thoughtfully selected to reflect the changing character of each season.

Spent the morning learning the art of Ikebana with @studio_seren I loved learning more about the practice and its beautifully considered approach to flowers, form and space.

The setting at Café Petiole, Somerset House couldn’t have been more beautiful either. I loved the colour palette and all the little details throughout. Nostalgic, playful and quietly romantic.

I’m always looking for new ways to make a home feel more beautiful and personal, and flowers can completely change the feeling of a space. Such a serene little escape from London life, and definitely not my last Ikebana class 🤍

🌿 An introduction to Ikebana 🌸

Last weekend, I was invited to my first Ikebana experience, discovering the centuries-old Japanese art of flower arrangement.

Often translated as “giving life to flowers”, Ikebana uses carefully selected blossoms, greenery and other natural materials to create a composition that reflects a feeling, mood or moment.

Working with seasonal branches, foliage and blooms, each element is carefully considered in relation to the vessel and the surrounding space, with balance and intention at the heart of the arrangement.

Have you heard about the floral art of Ikebana? 🌸 press invite

Often translated as “giving life to flowers,” this is the Japanese art form of flower arrangement. It’s not really about achieving anything particularly impressive or ostentatious. It’s more about working in harmony with what’s in your hand, letting the florals inform the arrangement, and using lines and negative space to create a sense of feeling.

It was such a treat to get a glimpse into this ancient art form from Serena at @studio_seren, a Kyoto-trained first-grade Ikebana master. And even more so to enjoy it with a lovely group at @cafepetiole inside the beautiful @somersethouse

I honestly thought flower arranging was simply about making flowers look pretty, but there’s so much more behind it - balance, form, space, seasonality, and intention.

What I loved most was how Serena Sensei guided me through each step. As a complete beginner, I never felt overwhelmed and really enjoyed slowing down and being present throughout the process 🌸
