Custom design solution for Christmas.

The issue, Bagel’s love of chewing (books) means that the bottom shelves have been covered with a makeshift protective layer of mylar and duct tape for years.

The solution “Hinged” a system of fabricated plexiglass operable barriers that keep one voracious consumer of books at bay, while allowing the other to see the goods.

First semester M.Arch. students present their work during fall 2023 final reviews for ARCH 501 (Core Studio I - Design Culture). This introductory studio foregrounds form, representation, and organization as the foundations of design culture. Design provocations challenge the students to think analytically, gain expertise in analogue and digital techniques, employ diverse representational formats, and work at a range of scales—objects, buildings, city blocks—to address compelling contemporary issues through architecture.

ARCH 501 was taught by Professor and Director of Graduate Studies Dawn Finley @interloop_architecture.

We're excited to announce the release of the digital publication, The Available City.

For the fourth edition of CAB, Artistic Director David Brown asked contributors to consider the impact collaborative design can have on collective space.

The collection of seven essays by Jill Desimini, Alexander Eisenschmidt, Stefan Gruber, Elleza Kelley, Ana Miljački, Rayna Razmilic, and studioAPT, reflect on key questions posed by The Available City: Who participates in the design of the city? How can changed points of view and changed policies offer new possibilities? Who and what can be improvisational organizers of the city? How can small elements have an exponential impact in the aggregate?

To read the whole issue, visit the link in our bio and download the PDF of The Available City!

This week is some old favorites. This is One House Per Day no.590 by @studioapt_design. It is O (Ring Pop) House – A round plan courtyard scheme with vertical and horizontal extensions (a bedroom tower and a workshop, respectively).

One House Per Day no.595 by @studioapt_design is X (Criss-Cross Applesauce) House – Two undulating bars with vertical circulation formed out of their intersection.

Playing House (XOXO) – Architecture has taken to various developmental exercises over the course of its practice. These scrimmages with possibility provide a chance to play at design, and the house is one such playground. The rules of (this) design are games of constraints; some are given (seven “houses,” all described orthographically within a square frame), some superimposed (the plan diagram for each house is either an “X” or an “O” set into a 50-foot square plot). The goal is to operate within these limitations; to score is to find a heretofore unnoticed latitude in their intersection. Taken as a sequence, these houses are a series of options (gambits for realization), taken as a set, they are a study of variables (hugs and kisses for the discipline), taken as a field (in the nine-square implied by the seven positions of a week in the ongoing Instagram feed grid), they are an arrangement in a game of noughts and crosses (check this feed’s grid view to see who is winning today).
