💫Why Meeting the Maker Still Matters: Maplewood Announces Return of Baker Street Flea this Saturday, September 19th.

🍂 The Fall Baker Street Flea takes place Saturday, September 19, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Maplewood Village, featuring more than 130 independent makers, artists and vintage curators, three music stages, food and drink, the Tap & Wine Yard Lounge, The Good Neighbor Project winners gallery and more.

There was a time when buying something handmade often meant knowing something about the person who made it. You might hear the story behind a ceramic mug, learn why an artist chose a particular material or discover that the piece of jewelry in your hand began as a sketch at someone’s kitchen table. 🌿

Today, almost anything can arrive at our door with a click.
But twice a year, Baker Street in Maplewood Village offers a reminder that there is still something special about meeting the person behind the work. 💛

That idea has been at the heart of the Baker Street Flea since its first event in the fall of 2020.

“What we’ve always loved is watching people connect with artists and makers they might never have discovered otherwise,” said Maggie Marotta, who produces the Baker Street Flea alongside Marichelle Hills and Nancy Cook. “You may come because you want to shop, but you leave knowing the people behind what you found. That connection has always been a huge part of why we do this.”

This fall, more than 130 independent makers, artists and vintage curators will fill Baker Street and the surrounding streets with ceramics, jewelry, art, textiles, vintage finds, specialty foods, food trucks and more.

For the people selling their work, markets like the Baker Street Flea offer something a website or social media feed can’t quite replicate.

“People come back and tell me where they put something they bought from me or who they gave it to. Sometimes they remember the conversation we had a year ago. That relationship is one of the best parts of doing a market like this.” Jess Preleski, Runa
Ceramics.

Folio Friday📚: Congrats to 🌟Jennifer Carter🌟, ASID Allied, @studioenvie for her 🏆Design Excellence Award-Winning🏆 small kitchen that checked all the boxes.

In her words, “A 30-year-old kitchen inside a 1950’s home was in dire need of a complete overhaul to create useful flow, function and style. Through the team’s work, the configuration of the space, and the key kitchen elements were extensively improved. At last, two+ people could utilize the space. The icing on the cake – gorgeous colors and layers of textures, presenting the owners with a kitchen that will stand the test of time.”

A glimpse into two of the projects I had the opportunity to photograph this summer. So grateful to have spent the summer surrounded by spaces like these and learning more about the design process along the way.

This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Studio Envie, and during my last week, I decided to write down some of the things I’ve learned over the past three months.

These pages only capture a small part of everything I learned over the summer, from cabinet details and construction notes to lighting layouts, clearances, and the many details that go into residential design.

I also had the chance to work on detailed floor plans and elevations, design boards, product sourcing, sample organization, site visits, and project coordination, which gave me a deeper understanding of how each part of the design process comes together.

I’m so grateful to my mentors for taking the time to teach me, answer my questions, and allow me to be part of the design process. I’ve learned so much in such a short amount of time, and I’m excited to carry this knowledge with me into my studies and future career.

✂️Red ribbons, big dreams, and a room full of women who show up for each other. Welcome to the Valley Street District, @studioenvie !🎉
As a South Orange Village Councilwoman and also the Broker who had the privilege of representing both sides of this deal, today felt extra special. Jennifer Carter, a SOMA resident for that last 8 years, built something remarkable here, a full-service interior design studio rooted in craft, intention and an obsession with getting every detail right. She grew up on construction sites and it shows, in the best possible way. This space is just the beginning. So proud to call South Orange home. Welcome to downtown South Orange Village!
