POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

25 years -- nearly half my life ago-- @adriancorporation's frantic answering machine messages wrestled me and my then girlfriend from groggy hungover sleep on the heels of an all night inebriated blowout that surely would've closed the book on us that morning after breakfast rather than a few weeks later. Instead, we argued about whether to stay inside or go to her apartment 12 blocks north of my loft on Bowery and 4th. By the time we got to her roof deck the towers were gone. We left a few days later for a brief respite in Long Island before feeling too displaced and where it felt too abstract, returned to the city, and hunkered down in my apartment with an apocalypse's worth of supplies and friends, including one -- @dankojp --who had been displaced from his apartment near ground zero. We'd cook each night in a kitchen from which you could still and for weeks smell and see the refuse as it made its way up The Bowery. The fact I was supposed to have flown out later that day to do, of all things, an episode of Will and Grace did not seem to rattle my then agent in LA, who put me on the first plane out of JFK a couple of weeks later, in spite of my protests. It felt somehow eerier being away. The weeks and winter that followed were some of my coldest and saddest, ironic after having spent something like a lost weekend the year prior in New York where I had only just moved to work and live indefinitely. Innocence globally and personally shattered. I returned to LA the following spring only to come back to work a few months after that and was put up in, of all places, a sublet at Ground Zero from which I could see straight into the abyss the towers left behind. I moved to The Chelsea Hotel, but never stopped looking back.
These photos are from that day, that night, and a couple of days later shopping for supplies-- where they had prohibited traffic below 14th. The final one was from a year and a half earlier just outside the dressing room for the job that brought me there to begin with.
There will always be a hole in my heart where those buildings and all the souls they contained once stood.
