The « Ferme km33 » is a traditional earthen house located in the Agafay desert, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Restored by @studioko using traditional building techniques, it is a private home that opens its doors to invited guests and artists. Owned by @riadjeannoel , who also coordinates the artist residency programme, KM33 offers a space for experimentation and creative freedom, welcoming artists each year. These photographs were taken during my residency in May 2022, when I developed a body of work combining installations, site-specific works and photography.

Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, designed by Studio KO and opened in 2017, is a 3,857 m² museum dedicated to the French fashion designer, located beside Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech, Morocco. The building translates elements of textile construction into masonry, using a curved façade of patterned terracotta brickwork to create depth and shadow.
The exterior combines locally produced brick, terracotta, and terrazzo with a restrained, largely windowless enclosure that protects the collections from direct sunlight. Inside, the exhibition galleries are organized around controlled lighting and climate conditions required for preserving delicate textiles. A permanent exhibition space is complemented by temporary galleries, a 130-seat auditorium, a research library, and a café opening onto a courtyard.
The brickwork is arranged in repeated patterns that recall the texture of woven fabric, while the smoother interior surfaces reference the lining of a garment. This distinction gives the building two different material characters: a textured exterior exposed to Marrakech's strong sunlight and a more controlled interior designed around the conservation and display of fashion.

Paris after dark, reimagined.

The legendary Bus Palladium enters a new chapter through the vision of Studio KO. Heritage, nightlife and hospitality meet in an interior where atmosphere is as important as function — preserving the rebellious spirit of a Parisian icon while giving it a contemporary design language.

When adaptive reuse feels entirely new.

Hotel Lucile transforms a historic Los Angeles building into an intimate hospitality destination shaped by warmth, colour and a distinctly residential sensibility. Electric Bowery demonstrates how existing architecture can evolve without losing the character that makes it memorable.

History, without nostalgia.

At Romègas Hotel in Valletta, Malta’s architectural heritage becomes the starting point for a contemporary hospitality experience. Historic character, Mediterranean materiality and carefully considered interventions create a dialogue between past and present.

A new idea of country living.

Quinta Filippa moves away from conventional rustic codes in favour of restraint, natural materials and a close relationship with the surrounding landscape. The result is contemporary Portuguese residential design that feels grounded in place rather than defined by trend.

THE ARCHIVE / 051 - Flamingo Estate (Los Angeles, California).

In Los Angeles, Richard Christiansen’s Flamingo Estate was reimagined by Paris-based Studio KO, founded by Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty. The 1940s residence brings together Moroccan tilework, vintage furniture, and seven acres of gardens developed with landscape designer Arnaud Casaus.

In the estate’s music room, Brazilian designer Percival Lafer’s “MP-115” modular seating (c. 1970) appears in green leather. The design consists of two independent upholstered elements, joined by exposed wooden supports and leather fastenings. Each seat can stand independently or be arranged with others to form a sofa.

Some places are designed to impress. Others know exactly how to make an entrance.

Studio KO interiors are anything but forgettable. Dramatic, theatrical and unapologetically bold. The kind of spaces that demand a second look.

Because sometimes, subtlety is terribly overrated.

Olivier Marty, co-founder of the Paris-based architecture firm Studio KO (@studioko), specializes in giving historic structures a considered second life. His latest project, the Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent (CCA Tashkent, @cca_tashkent), does just that for the 1912 tram depot and diesel station in the heart of Uzbekistan’s capital, transforming it into the country’s first permanent institution dedicated to contemporary art.

Working with partner Karl Fournier, Marty chose to preserve, rather than overwrite, the building’s character. Ahead of CCA Tashkent’s public opening, Marty spoke with ArtAsiaPacific about the thinking behind the transformation, and what it means for contemporary art in Central Asia.
