‘THE EMPTY CROSSROADS’

This year @irelandfashionweek celebrated the theme ‘Coming Home’ and it was an honour to introduce our new design at their Damhsa show held at the @rdsdublin on World Mental Health Day.

‘The Empty Crossroads’ is my interpretation of the death of dance and music in Ireland during the famine years. Before the ‘great hunger’ crossroads were meeting points full of laughter, culture and identity. What followed was silence, death, displacement and forced emigration.

@magee1866 Donegal tweed references the hessian potato sack and potato skin, its purple, pink and yellow flecks glimmering with hope against the rust weave. Significant as rust itself is corrosion and decay caused by water and moisture, two factors for the catastrophic potato blight. The Iridescent purple/black taffeta used for the inner folds reflects this potato blight beautifully.

Four copper buttons by Sam Lafford of @studiolafford references Irish mining and the work many emigrants later travelled to America and Canada to do.

Our collaboration with @hannahatsofdonegal, symbolises the suppression of Irish culture by state and religious forces.

Those who stayed safeguarded what was left; those forced to leave ensured our culture was never forgotten. We’ve sown seeds throughout the world. Now it is time to celebrate our culture and create a better future.

June was for…not one weekend free 👏

From a slew of concerts at Marlay to appearing on @rteradio1 & @rte2fm to chat all things changing fashion and Marilyn Monroe, the month flew by!

I’m very lucky to be able to comment, write and approach Irish fashion and culture through a historical lens, thank you to everyone who asked me to come along and chat 🎙️

Dim warm light, champagne in coupes, a speakeasy feel in an Art Deco styled cocktail bar, ambery notes of perfume in the air…

Picture a room l like that, and you instantly reach for black, worn in as many textures as possible. I added a crisp white @andtateshirts shirt as a nod to the Maestro of the house, and followed his habit of pinning a brooch to the tie, here from @studiolafford

A unique engagement ring isn't simply about choosing a bigger stone.

We meet design constantly and notice it rarely: the buildings we walk past, the rooms we sit in, the objects we use, the clothes we put on. Too often it is taken for granted, or reduced to looks and function.

Design Week Dublin asked us to stop and look again. I spent the week listening to architects, interior designers and fashion designers, and for me the repeated common thread was design made to outlast a season, where function, form and beauty are one conversation, with close attention to materials.

Róisín Lafferty’s talk, Bold Moves, was my favourite. The historic alongside the avant-garde, and a whole world built around a vision that you can step into. The interior designers speaking on sourcing art for a project made it sound deeply personal, which I can relate to. And in fashion, it was good to hear new Irish names working with heritage codes, and established ones who have run successful businesses for decades.

Thank you to @editorsarahmcdonnell and @theofficialjanemcdonnell for creating the space where these conversations could happen.

Apropos of #flattering yesterday’s @designweekdublin treated us to a juicy interview with fashion designer @mariagrachvogel by @editorsarahmcdonnell . Read my September column in @theglossmag before you head to @havanaboutique to try and buy a pair of Grachvogel’s magic pants and draped jumpsuits (avec deep pockets). Flatters you, madam!

The opening of new bar @kaikaidublin was stunning. Such a quality vibe. Gorgeous atmosphere. Really good African wines curated by @hi.spiritswineclub. I had a delicately robust rosé, dry, very slightly sweet.
And a virgin mojito. 10/10.

S&P was out and about on Thursday for an evening of understated elegance

Studio Lafford took up residence at DesignYard, Dublin’s leading contemporary jewellery gallery, for the month of June. On the evening of the private preview, friends, collectors, and collaborators gathered to see a new suite of collections, celebrating Sam Lafford’s evolution as one of Ireland’s most compelling designer-makers!
