What can natural, bio-based and reused materials teach us about the way we design and build?

Together with the Flanders Architecture Institute (VAi), we’ve produced Material Shift, a new podcast series exploring the shifts taking place in architectural practice through conversations with architects, artists, builders and researchers...

The first season, New Aesthetics, looks beyond the surface of buildings to explore the material choices, labour and energy behind them. How do we rethink architectural aesthetics when working with materials that are reused, grown or taken from the earth? And how might these choices change not only the way buildings look, but also how they are made and experienced?

The first episode, Designing with Nature, is now available, featuring Nicky Vancaudenberg (@agwa_architecture), Karel Loontiens (@aardig_gedacht & @studioloho) and Theresa Zschäbitz (@bauhaus_earth).

Material Shift is part of ACCEL (Architects in Circular Construction Elevated Learning), an Erasmus+ project developed in collaboration with @@atelier_amaco , @facultearchitectureulb , @rwthaachenuniversity and @vlaams_architectuurinstituut .

Listen to the podcast via Spotify, Apple podcast or YouTube.

Clients went bold with the colour—and it paid off. Olive green, warm timber and a hit of red ocher make this bathroom feel like its own little world. Very well put together by @thesunseekerbyronbay

Looking back at September. People, places, design, works in progress and lovely light I couldn’t resist.

In love with @studioloho wallskin. Its larger grain and thicker layering allow for greater creative freedom in achieving unique textures. Like any other LOHO Wall Skin, the Raw variant is made from natural materials, contributing to a healthy indoor environment and sustainability.

“A Built-in Studio”

A warm, inviting floor sets the tone, blending in harmony with the walls and interior. The soft beige tones create a pleasant, calming feel.

From their studio in Belgium, Studio Loho approaches the bathroom through material, form and craftsmanship. Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, embracing the natural character of the material and the subtle variations that come with the making process.

The result is quietly sculptural. Soft, organic forms with a tactile quality that brings warmth and character to the bathroom.

Made slowly, made by hand, and designed to live beautifully.
