A new BERTS cabin in the making.

A glimpse behind the scenes as our latest cabin begins to take shape in the workshop, soon to find its home nestled amongst the trees in the Oxfordshire countryside.

From the first stages of construction to the careful consideration of every material, junction and finish, each BERTS cabin is thoughtfully crafted off-site, bringing together precision, craftsmanship and a deep respect for the natural environment.

This cabin also marks an exciting evolution in our material palette. For the first time, we're introducing a beautifully earthy, moss-green lime-based plaster to the bathroom, offering a softer, quieter alternative to our signature tiled interiors.

Alongside this, reclaimed terracotta tiles from @bertandmay bring warmth, texture and a previous life into the space.

Working with reclaimed materials in a factory setting isn't always the easiest route, but it's one we're committed to. A real labour of love, made possible by our incredibly dedicated team of makers in Cornwall.

We're also introducing @wearepaperstone across our new cabin kitchens. Made from recycled paper and resin, this innovative surface brings together durability, warmth and a beautifully understated finish.

Another step towards a more considered, lower-impact material palette.

This cabin marks the beginning of an exciting new collaboration and will form part of a wider, carefully considered offering that we look forward to sharing in time.

A slow-grown vision, where each step is taken with curiosity, care and integrity. An approach that feels very much aligned with our own.

For now, a few moments from the making.

The story behind our viral sink.

It started with an old structure on the same spot. We took it down, kept the original roof tiles, and rebuilt it with a better finish and a kitchen that works.

At its centre, a stone bebedero sourced from a local nursery, shaped by Campo Sol stonemasons. A natural brass tap from Studio Ore and thick Iroko doors by our carpenter, Alfons, completed it.

Same place, same view, a new way to use it.

So far our favorite furniture piece we have made.

Basalt single unit countertop accompanied with solid charred Portuguese chestnut fronts settled on two blocks of basalt.

Dry hire. Properly equipped.

College Farm is offered as a dry location hire, with productions bringing their own camera, lighting and crew.

The infrastructure is already here: dedicated 63A three-phase power, acoustic insulation, Starlink Wi-Fi across the site, production access and on-site kit for the everyday workings of a shoot.

Full production specifications and downloadable drawings are available through the website.

Introducing College Farm.

A new rural studio and production location by @box9design in East Sussex.

College Farm began with an existing agricultural barn + vintage fire engine workshop and a simple idea: rather than build something new, could we take the scale and character already there and completely reimagine what happened within it?

The result is a 230 sqm contemporary space built around volume, texture and light.

At its centre is a six-metre-high clay-lined room, surrounded by smoky oak, raw + burnished steel, natural timber + quieter, more intimate spaces.

Outside, a pool, Mortex and rich timber sauna, terrace, open barn and three-quarters of an acre of landscape extend the location into the surrounding countryside.

It has become several things at once. A rural studio for BOX 9,
a place to gather, make and think. And now, a location available for stills, motion + editorial production.

It's the changing light and quietness of the space that we keep coming back to. There’s an energy to the place that is difficult to capture in photographs alone and we can’t wait to share more of it.

Behind the quieter architecture is proper production infrastructure: 63A three-phase power, acoustic insulation, full-site Wi-Fi, vehicle access and production support spaces - all considered as part of the project rather than added afterwards.
Blackout can also be arranged on request.

Full location, production information and drawings via the College Farm website.

September was equal parts install days, inspiration, and getting out and enjoying the last stretch of summer.

Julie was bouncing between the studio, job sites, presentations, and had a very fun afternoon by the water, Alex was hard at work one minute and somewhere between Paris and the Moroccan desert the next, Annie was able to sneak in a well deserved trip to China, and Ellie was maintaining her role as resident furniture tester.

It was a good month at JRI, to say the least! 🩶 #JulieRootesInteriors
