A week in Belgium 🇧🇪

Five intense days, 16 performing arts organisations, and countless conversations with artists, producers and the people building the structures around them.

What struck us most was not any single theatre or organisation, but the ecosystem as a whole.

Belgium’s performing arts field is strongly divided along linguistic lines, and everyone has to navigate where they belong—including international artists. At the same time, it is a remarkably well-supported ecosystem, built over decades of public investment that has allowed artists, organisations and international networks to grow.

Cuts have happened here too, and more are coming. Organisations are having to adapt. But there are strong structures to fall back on.

During the week, we visited @hiros.be, @campo.nu, @kvsbrussels, @kaaitheater, @halles.be, @viernulvier.gent, @ntgent, @desingelartscentre, and @arenberg_antwerpen, among others.

Different models, cities and linguistic contexts, but together they revealed an extraordinarily dynamic infrastructure for developing, producing and presenting performing arts.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway was this: progressive performing arts in Belgium don’t feel marginal.

They are part of the norm.

Artistic approaches, questions of representation and visual languages that might elsewhere be labelled “alternative” or aimed at niche audiences appear here simply as part of contemporary cultural life. And the audiences we encountered were genuinely diverse.

At KVS, we joined a large audience focus group around demos of works in development, organised by WIPCOOP in collaboration with @mestizoartsplatform. Rather than encountering audiences only at the point of a finished production, the model invites them into the artistic process itself.

We returned from Belgium thinking about what becomes possible when an arts ecosystem is built not only around individual productions, but around artists, experimentation, audiences, international exchange and long-term structures.

And, inevitably, about what we can learn from this in Finland.

Organised by @circusdancefinland, @finncultblx and @theatreinfofinland

It started there, but I didn’t realize it. I’ll present on December 3rd. Thank you, @antoinepickels 🙏🏾 « UNDERYOURSKINS [untold.unfolded.unprecedented] desires to transform that moment inside all of us into a state.

UNDERYOURSKINS [untold.unfolded.unprecedented] is an untold epiphany, an unfolded confession, and an unprecedented collective interview hidden inside an intimate, visceral performance.

UNDERYOURSKINS [untold.unfolded.unprecedented] is one movement and breath leading to a disincarnate state of being for one, for all.

UNDERYOURSKINS [untold.unfolded.unprecedented] is made of space and people where distance and proximity are the alphabet.
