We spend the majority of our adult lives at work. For many of us, we see our colleagues more than we see our friends. Sometimes even more than our families during the week.

So it’s hardly surprising that people become friends, develop crushes or even fall in love. Some of the happiest couples I know met at work and are still together years later.

But that’s not the conversation I think we should be having.
The real question is:

What happens when things don’t work out? Can two people remain professional after a rejection? After a breakup? After one person’s feelings aren’t returned?

Because while those situations are personal, the consequences often aren’t. When tension follows someone into meetings, projects or everyday interactions, it doesn’t just affect the two people involved. It can affect collaboration, communication, confidence and even someone’s ability to enjoy coming to work.

Being disappointed is human. Feeling hurt is human. But professionalism means not allowing those feelings to dictate how you treat another person in a workplace.

A healthy work environment doesn’t require everyone to be friends. It doesn’t require everyone to like each other. It simply requires that everyone feels safe, respected and able to do their job without carrying the weight of someone else’s unresolved emotions.

So maybe the question isn’t: “Should you date a coworker?”

Maybe it’s: “If things don’t go as planned, are both people emotionally mature enough to remain professional?”

Because that’s what ultimately determines whether a workplace relationship becomes a beautiful love story—or an unnecessary source of stress.

I’m curious where you stand on this. Would you date someone you work with?

Again a big thank you to @studiovintagesofia for letting me play dress-up. All clothes and many more are available at the store (at least the ones I didn’t end up buying myself 😅)

In my last post, I talked about being with an avoidant — and how that dynamic can sometimes make even a securely attached person start behaving anxiously.

So how do we know: is it us, or is it what we’re receiving?

Part of secure attachment is learning to regulate our own emotions. Our partner isn’t responsible for calming every fear, insecurity or uncomfortable feeling we have.

But we’re not responsible for regulating theirs either.

We shouldn’t have to constantly adjust ourselves to prevent someone from pulling away — calculating how much affection is too much, how often we can reach out or how carefully we need to express our needs.

There is a difference between learning to regulate yourself and learning to tolerate a relationship that keeps dysregulating you.

Sometimes anxiety comes from our own wounds and triggers. But sometimes it comes from inconsistency, mixed signals, affection followed by withdrawal or simply never knowing where we stand.

So instead of only asking “Why am I feeling anxious?”, maybe we should also ask: “What keeps happening right before I feel anxious?”

A secure relationship won’t eliminate every insecurity you have. That’s still your work.

But if someone’s actions consistently put you in a state of anxiety, don’t automatically dismiss that feeling as an attachment issue you need to fix.

Sometimes the alarm is internal. Sometimes there’s actually something setting it off. Learning the difference is the hard part.

This is why I’d take peace and calm over butterflies every time.

After years of experience, I’ve finally learned that, for me, butterflies often mean anxiety — whereas peace is my nervous system relaxing around that person. And these days, that feels a lot more like attraction than chaos ever did.

Special thanks to @studiovintagesofia for giving me the freedom to explore through their beauty and treasures. It’s easily the best store for second hand clothes in Sofia, so make sure to go check it out.
