his car shown here is a beautiful 1991 JaguarSport XJR-15 (chassis 023), photographed by @stylenl during the 2018 edition of the London Classic Car Show. This XJR-15 (H236 UNT) is the only example of the 50 production cars built that is finished in ‘Daytona Black’. The JaguarSport XJR-15 was developed by Scottish racing driver Tom Walkinshaw, founder of Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR). His relationship with Jaguar rose after success racing a Jaguar XJ-S in the 1982 European Touring Car Championship. By 1988, the TWR-designed Jaguar XJR-9 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. With demand growing for a racing road car, TWR and Jaguar Cars Limited formed JaguarSport in the late 1980s to develop the XJR-15 and XJ220. Initially dubbed ‘XJR-14’, ‘R9-R’, or ‘S3’ internally, the Peter Stevens-designed XJR-15 was mechanically based on the running gear of the the Tony Southgate-designed, ahead-of-it’s-time, Le Mans-winning XJR-9LM. Stevens began with the ex-Win Percy XJR-8 tub, building a Le Mans-style road car per Walkinshaw’s request. Stevens later revised the carbon monocoque for road use, while Jim Router and David Fullerton tuned the chassis. Carbon fiber work was done by Astec Composites and Dove. Andy Morrison served as project manager, with Charlie Bamber and Martin Smith developing the engine under Allan Scott. It was also built to race in the 1991 Jaguar Sport Intercontinental Challenge—held at Monaco, Silverstone, and Spa—with 16 cars entered and two spares prepared. In total, 50 XJR-15s were made, including race cars, LM versions, road cars, and 2 R9R prototypes, each with unique differences. • How many made? 52 total including prototypes. • Engine: 6.0L Naturally aspirated dry sump V12 450 horsepower • Debut: 1991, Silverstone circuit, UK • Top Speed: ~185mph • 0-60mph: around 3.3 seconds • Photo credit: @stylenl • Research: @rarecarsonly

This is the 2019 Hongqi S9 concept car, a design from Chinese luxury automaker Hongqi, which is owned by the China FAW Group, a Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer. Serving as Creative Director in 2019, Yangfeng Ding designed this concept car for Hongqi as a celebration of 70 years of the People’s Republic of China. After initially making numerous vehicles for high-ranking government officials, the initial company ceased operations by the year 1981. In the early 1990s, the company was revived and started manufacturing foreign products in China as Hongqi models such as the Audi 100. This style of work continued until around 2018, when the Hongqi company made a massive shift in direction during their ‘Hongqi Brand Strategy Conference’ in Beijing where a new logo, as well as new designs were introduced. During this time of success Hongqi decided to introduce the S9 sports car in 2019. By the year 2021, a more production-ready version of the S9 was exhibited at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show (shown here). That prototype was designed by the famous Italian car designer Walter de Silva, and showcased a seemingly new design, especially in the front end. The prototype was developed by Italy-based Silk EV and Chinese FAW group under a new joint venture founded in 2020 as Silk-FAW Automotive. One month after debuting the S9 prototype, former Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa also joined the Silk-FAW team. Plans to build 99 examples in Modena, Italy unfortunately never came to fruition, and the limited-production work was delegated back to China, although not much further progress has been made seemingly. The only new development in regards to the S9 project came about in 2023, when a single Hongqi S9 (with production bodywork) was displayed at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este event. • How many made? 1 concept, 1 or 2 prototypes • Engine: 4.0L twin-turbocharged plug-in hybrid V8 engine with the assistance of theee electric motors (planned) • Debut: 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show (concept) • Top Speed: around 250mph (planned) • 0-60mph: n/a • Photo Credit: @stylenl • Research: @rarecarsonly
