Andre had been collecting beautiful things long before I came along.

As a child, he spent hours with his father exploring markets, garage sales and antique stores, developing an eye for objects that were interesting, beautifully made and, most importantly, brought him joy.

So when we’d been dating for several months and I still hadn’t been invited into his Wellington apartment, I started to wonder why.

Eventually he confessed.

He’d been Googling my work and was terrified I’d walk through the door and start critiquing everything.

When I was finally allowed in, the opposite happened. I found this wonderful, character-filled oasis, years of collecting and surrounding himself with things he loved. It was comfortable, interesting, unpredictable and completely Andre.

A story of a life well lived, told through a home.

Of course, being me, I eventually suggested we move one or two things. What followed wasn’t a redesign. Over the next couple of years, Andre and I simply edited together, moving furniture, hanging art, taking things away, adding others and allowing the apartment to evolve.
Andre had spent years looking at fashion and interiors and understood instinctively the difference between something timeless and something simply on trend. My role was often just helping him find the relationships between the things he already loved.

And perhaps that’s why this little apartment captures Everyday Opulence so beautifully.
It was never about how much something cost, or creating something perfect.

It was about a man who had spent a lifetime collecting things that brought him joy, and creating a home that told his story.

For me, that’s what a home should do.

Our first event for Pride Week 2026 is a showing of Andre Afamasaga’s 26-minute documentary “Alofa” (“to love” in Samoan) followed by a Q&A. Sunday 12 April 6pm in Te Whare Hononga🌈 join us on Andre’s journey of self-acceptance amid the explicit and implicit pressures of faith, religion, and culture. Alofa had an Australian national broadcast on ABC in 2024 and was selected for Doc Edge Film Festival, NZ 2025. This is a free event but your koha in support of our work is always appreciated.

I can’t believe it’s been a year since we kicked off New Zealand’s first cult awareness conference at Tūranga Library in Christchurch. We took a huge leap of faith – not just financially – trusting that this wild idea could actually work and that the incredible speakers we invited from around the world and across Aotearoa would turn up.

And they did. In full force. Their courage, passion and expertise made Decult 2024 an unforgettable two days of connection, learning and healing.

A year on, we’re seeing the ripple effects — new professional networks, survivor groups and ongoing collaborations. Many of our speakers, some who had never gone public before, have since written memoirs, given talks, released podcasts and videos, or contributed to legal submissions.

It hasn’t been an easy ride, but my heart is full. What started as a spontaneous, impossible-seeming idea became real through the friends, volunteers and allies who jumped in to help — each offering time, skills or funds to make it happen.

You know who you are — and I can’t thank you enough. ❤️

Such an honour to judge the Social Good category of the @bestdesignawards again this year, alongside an incredible group of people. Delving into and discussing how work in the creative industry can create meaningful impact and strengthen the social fabric of Aotearoa through thoughtful strategy, engagement with communities, affirmation of identities and beautiful design is such an inspiring exciting space to work within. I feel so lucky to have contributed the small ways that I can.

Kia ora koutou! It’s Māori language week and we’re still buzzing (and practicing our reo) after the first ever Decult event in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) hosted by the @anzasw_aotearoa.

Decult director @ankerichterwriter talked about our mahi (work), we screened our short documentary DECULT VOICES (soon to be released), and then @lindybluesky from the @olive_leaf_network spoke about “the high-demand hand” and other aspects of her important work for cult survivors. Ka pai!

Thanks to all the social workers who came for this kōrero (discussion), and the Mana Mokopuna Children’s Commissioner’s Team as well as Chief Victim Advisor Ruth Money. And we had a last-minute surprise guest: Human rights advocate Andre Afamasaga who impressed everyone as the incredible MC at our 2024 conference and features in the doco too. Arohanui!

Had the best time in Wellington this week with Lindy Jacomb from the @olive_leaf_network at our @decult_nz event Raising Cult Awareness for @anzasw_aotearoa where we screened the DECULT VOICES doco that will soon be available for everyone to watch.

Thanks so much for having us, to all the social workers who came, our allies who supported us or bought my book, and our special surprise guest (and incredible Decult 2024 MC) @styleuso. Also had a special dinner with more decultivists that night and a kōrero with Marama Davidson’s team at Parliament the day after.

I’m so fired up again to shift the conversation about cults in Aotearoa from mockery and shame (“these people chose this” or “this would never happen to me”) to the realisation that everyone is vulnerable, that between 50,000 to 100,000 Kiwis are stuck or have been in cults, and that most of them never had a choice in the first place but were born and raised in them. Kids in cults need a voice.

Too many cults use fear and shame to suppress LGBTQIA+ identities, forcing people into silence or conformity - or harmful conversion practices.

When purity culture and homophobia collide in cultic groups, queer youth often pay the highest price.

Hosted by human rights advocate Andre Afamasaga, this episode of Decult Talks brings together powerful rainbow voices: former Jehovah’s Witness Luke Hollis, “Excommunicated” author and former Exclusive Brethren Craig Hoyle and US cult expert Dr Janja Lalich.
