Today I’m sharing outtakes from my 2021–2022 photo essay Melanin Rising, a continuation of my debut photo essay from 2019–2020, Light Skin Dark Skin.

Melanin Rising centred people with dark skin. I photographed five people over 12 months, which culminated in an exhibition. I asked my sitters about their experiences with colourism, how media representations of fair, white skin as an ideal had affected them in their formative years, and what they would want future generations to know and love about their melanin.  An excerpt from Kadijata’s @stylishkadi essay: “For so many years darker-skinned women have been told they were not beautiful. This must stop. One: because we no longer care what you think and two: who are you to tell me that and three: why should I listen to someone else about my skin tone.

I have been given a voice and I will speak up. I will correct and educate on topics like these, topics that people feel uncomfortable talking about. Now is the time.”

29 candles and a heart full of wishes. This is what I have learnt in my 20s so far, embrace every moment! Your 20s are a time for exploration (travel the world while you are still here), self-discovery, and growth. Take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them. Surround yourself with inspiring people, pursue your passions, and prioritise your well-being. Sometimes it’s okay to feel uncertain; it’s all part of your journey. Enjoy the adventure. My end to 2023 was saying goodbye to my childhood home in Kuantan. I hadn’t returned to Kuantan in six years, and even that was an overnight stay. This house saw it all - from when I first moved to Malaysia to the sleepless night before my first day at school. I still remember the sound of Papa playing the guitar that night as I lay in bed, scared about what school would be like. The delicious meals my mother would cook in the kitchen, Deepavali lunches and dinners, memories with friends, what felt like endless days of studying to become the straight-A student I never was and later wrapping my head around but not entirely understanding the finality of leaving my parents and going back to New Zealand.

What felt like a lot for me was much more for my parents, who owned this house for 38 years - this house now marks a new chapter for a young family, becoming their home.

With each passing year, I need to stop and process the change around me as change feels more significant and poignant. The one constant, though, is that life goes on.

Thank you to all the incredible people in my orbit for making 2023 so special.
