![[STORY] YAY! Last year on a quiet day at work (hello corona), I started doodeling with a ballpoint on a piece of cardboard, just for fun. Although I never stopped drawing and painting in my studio, it surprised me how much I ENJOYED drawing without having EXPECTATIONS! Without wanting it to be grand and leading me to higher places. I even proudly showed my doodles to a friend and it struck her: "You never are this thrilled when you show me a piece you worked on for months!". @hetzusjevan
In the meantime mister @su6uc asked me to make his portrait and one thing led to another :) Today on his birthday he received the framed works and by the look of his big smiley face you can tell how much he likes it! ;)
These events made me think of what the hell I was doing in my SERIOUS STUDIO. Why do I always paint on large pieces of paper? Do I ENJOY painting on a large scale or do I just want to get noticed and leave a BIG impression? Is JOY my main motivator or my NEED to 'make' it as an artist? Does this slow process with moist materials even suit my personality? (nooooo!) Can SMALL works bring me as MUCH satisfaction as big works I worked on for months? Why am I painting anyway??
From this moment I started EXPERIMENTING again, making works just to see what else I enjoyed doing. I used ballpoints to draw a BIRTHDAYGIFT for a friend because I was to LAZY to cycle to the city for a gift ánd she always demanded a free drawing :'D. @rashidahsimon I drew here an owl. She loved it and more people asked me to make a drawing in exchange of money. Even more people wanted a drawing and again one thing led to another! Few months later my face ended up in a newspaper and now LOTS of people want a drawing made by me!
I guess I wanted to share this story and maybe make you think about your own choices. Do you dare to follow your gut feeling? Do you make decisions based on what you THINK is best or what you FEEL is the best? :)
