Moi from Helsinki, as they say here.
We had a wonderful trip. A bit cold at times, but what’s to be expected from a trip to Suomi in March?

We’ve been doing so many fun things here. Like visiting Bioart Society and learning from Yvonne Billimore (@yvonnebillimore) and Eliisa Suvanto (@eliisasuvanto) about the wonderful work they do. But it started earlier with an artist walk outside with Mari Keski-Korsu (@mkk_kuus) and Joss Allen (@gardening_otherwise) on a recreational island. We talked about foraging, sauna rituals and local housing politics, and yes... We did end up in the Sompasauna... very nice.

The next day we were at Bioart Society (@bioartsociety) and joined their monthly Breakfast Club, eating some fancy porridge and listening to a reading by Yvette Bathgate (@yvettebathgate ), before diving into lunch and a collective reading with artist and researcher Anastasia (A) Alevtin (@awaitingbody ). The day was still young, so we headed off to @k.o.e.k.e.i.t.t.i.o in a nearby suburb, where we met Jani Anders Purhonen (@andersano ) for pizza and conversation.

Saturday was an internal workshop day, as we needed to prepare for the Småland Triennial (@smalandstriennalen) this summer. Our curatorial group had prepared a wonderful workshop mapping our knowledge of Småland. Will invite you to this soon.

Not much sleep, as you can hear, but we kept our spirits up. Kiitos everyone for making the visit so lovely.

Let’s hang out in Småland for the Triennial in late May.

In October we met at @kfhuset, Klöse. Under the aurora borealis and around a campfire, we ate, discussed and hosted workshops. Highlights: @norrlandsparadoxen (Arne Müller) on the so called "green" transition in the north of Sweden, Sophia Josephson’s "The View From Nowhere – From Urban to Synthetic Gaze on Rural Areas" workshop, our own mapping of ideas for Smålands Triennial and a beautiful walk and talk along Lögdeälven – one of the few unharnessed rivers in the north of Sweden – with Sergio Bravo. Big thanks to everyone who joined excited for what’s next!

✨ The course Art as Social Transformation at @sigfrid.se folkhögskola kicked off this August! ✨

So far we’ve…

🌳 visited the magical Folkpark Tyrolen in Blädinge

🧀 Learned to make Småland’s traditional ostkaka with neighbor & farmer Viveca Fransson and former cheesecake champion Patrik Geijersson
🫚 Visited Linné University for a speculative ginger bug workshop with Zeenath Hasan

🌿 held a clay workshop in the forest while discussing Ursula K. Le Guin’s Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction

🎨 Met up with Konstfrämjandet Småland to talk about next year’s @smalandstriennalen where we as a group will contribute

💭 Thanks everyone for inspiring and fruitful discussions already!

Since then we’ve continued with weekly online meet-ups, and soon we’ll head north to @kfhuset in Klöse for our next session.

Can’t wait.

Shortly before the opening of the Nordic Labour Film Festival, we open the exhibition The Actual Promise – What We Promised Each Other. About culture’s place inside of struggles, past and present.

Opening: November 3, 6–8 pm

Flags and posters, film and literature, have been important for the labour movement, as well as for social movements, as a means of getting their messages out. Both historically and today. In the exhibition, we show posters and flags from the labour movement history in Sweden, as well as posters from struggles both past and present, here and in different parts of the world. The exhibition also shows how culture can play a part inside the struggle and how one might implement that today.

Malmö is a city where the fight for everyone's rights and equal conditions is constantly present. The right to equal working conditions also includes the right to equal conditions regardless of ethnic origin, gender identity, sexuality, age, functional variation and class. Can culture contribute to creating change? If so, what role does it have in the struggle?

Participating artists and organizations:
Arbetarrörelsens Arkiv och Bibliotek, Stockholm
Arbetarrörelsens Arkiv Skåne
Justseeds konstnärskollektiv - Celebrate People’s History
