We are proud to highlight Ametra Cheeks, who has been elected as Miss Sophomore at Southern University and A&M College for the 2026–2027 academic year. An Elementary Education major hailing from Hammond, LA, Ametra is a dedicated scholar-leader committed to ensuring every student feels valued, heard, and empowered. A FOUNDATION OF SERVICE. Ametra has hit the ground running on the Bluff, establishing herself as a cornerstone of the freshman class through her tireless work ethic: • Miss Sophomore Elect • SGA Leadership: Chief of Staff for freshman class • Top Jags Scholar: Recognizing her academic excellence and commitment to high achievement. • Campus Ambassador: A Jaguar Ambassador for the 2026–2027 term, representing the institution’s values to prospective students. ACADEMIC & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT. Beyond her royal title, Ametra is deeply invested in the sisterhood and academic fabric of Southern University: • Honor Society: An Alpha Lambda Delta inductee for the 2026–2027 academic year. • Mentorship & Support: Serving as the Secretary for Big Sister Little Sister and an active member of My Sister’s Keeper. THE PLATFORM: “LEGACY” As a first-generation queen, Ametra’s platform is built on the belief that a legacy isn’t just something you inherit it’s something you build: • Paving the Way: Showing students from all backgrounds that they can go above and beyond to occupy leadership spaces. • Bridging the Gap: Aiming to connect student leadership directly with the student body to ensure every Jaguar is heard. • Value Over Numbers: Moving the campus culture toward a space where students are seen as valued members of a family, not just a number. It is with immense pride that I announce the historic chartering of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society at Southern University and A&M College, which took place on March 21, 2024. Alpha Lambda Delta recognizes and celebrates the academic excellence of first-year students, marking their incredible journey in higher education. Eligibility for this prestigious society is an accolade reserved for those who have demonstrated exceptional academic prowess, achieving a GPA of 3.5 or higher. On this notable day, we inducted 193 students and 7 honorary staff members who became the proud charter members, setting a precedent of excellence and scholarly achievement for years to come. This momentous occasion is owed greatly to the vision and tireless efforts of Dr. Jovan Thomas, our founding advisor. His unwavering dedication, alongside the committed involvement of Co-Sponsors Dr. Alisa Ross and Ms. LaShanti Holden, has turned this aspiration into a significant milestone in our university’s history. We are looking forward to the impact Alpha Lambda Delta will have on our campus, as we continue to support and acknowledge the remarkable accomplishments of our students.
