Last Friday marked the end of my year as Education Officer at Brighton Students’ Union.

To round off the year, the staff team and incoming officers spent the day together celebrating endings and new beginnings, with a little healthy competition along the way playing volleyball and bowls. ☀️🏐

Looking back, this year has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. It’s been a year of learning, listening, advocating and, above all, representing students.

I’m immensely proud of the campaigns I’ve led and the changes we’ve been able to achieve together- from securing £2 hot meals and creating Academic Brunch, to opening underused classrooms as study spaces, improving transparency around academic information, encouarging more choice in assesments through policy, and so much more. Every campaign started with listening to students and working to turn their experiences into purposeful change.

This role has taught me so much about leadership, partnership working, governance, negotiation and the importance of persistence. Most importantly, it has reinforced why student voice matters and what can happen when it is listened to.

Thank you to everyone who supported me throughout the year- colleagues, university staff, and, of course, the students who trusted me to represent them.

This role may be ending, but the work certainly isn’t. I’ll be returning for my final year of studies in September, and I’m excited to continue using the skills I’ve developed in governance, strategic leadership, public speaking and stakeholder engagement. If you think those skills could add value to your organisation or event, I’d love to hear from you.

As alumni, you have the power to inspire the next generation 💡

Every year, Beepurple, the student enterprise team at the University of Brighton, organises a week-long course called StartUp Hive, which equips students with the tools and skills to set up their own businesses.
As part of StartUp Hive, they welcome back alumni speakers who have gone on to launch their own businesses – some of whom first began their entrepreneurial journey through previous StartUp Hives! ❤️

Hear from three students – Kitty Anita Gwolitya (Computer Science), Rosie Ellen Birch (Creative Writing/@bsu.communitiesofficer) and Mohamed Elzeny (Finance and Investment) – as they share what they gained from hearing directly from alumni who have been there and done it themselves. 👇

1 year has flown by 😱. Can you believe I have JUST a WEEK left as Education Officer!? And what a journey it has been! So like any job nearing its end, the office pack up is necessary. I made my corner in the office a cosy nook, where I could feel empowered to lobby for students and win campaigns. The nook did just that! So enjoy this reel of my pack up, and a few photos of what the corner looked like before I moved in, during my tenure as officer, and after I packed up. It’s a whole ride! ☺️🥹😆🎉📍

Yesterday marked the final Academic Board meeting of the 2025/26 academic year- and my last as Education Officer.

Academic Board is the University’s principal academic authority, responsible for academic standards, quality, regulations, and the future direction of teaching, research and the student experience. It’s also one of the most important places for ensuring students’ voices are heard at the highest level of university decision-making.

Over the past year, I’ve used my seat on the Board to lobby for changes that students told me mattered. This has helped secure improvements including students being able to access full module and assessment schedules at the start of the academic year from September 2026, as well as opening up unused teaching rooms as independent study spaces.

As my time on Academic Board comes to a close, and I approach the end of my term as Education Officer, I’m proud to have represented students in these discussions and helped drive changes that will benefit future students.

Thank you to everyone I’ve worked alongside this year.

PS: My last day as Education Officer is Friday 26 June, 2026 ❤️
