Album Review 490
Artist : Subserviency
EP : Observing the Ancestral Twilight
Genre : Technical Brutal Death Metal
Year : 2026
Rating : 9/10
Personal Favorite Track : Observing the Ancestral Twilight

Subserviency is a death metal band based in an area that not many pay attention to for that style of music ; Arkansas. There's definitely a scene out there that's been on my radar for a while, consisting of bands mostly in the hardcore adjacent death metal territory, such as Terminal Nation, Morbid Visionz and Open Kasket, so it's very refreshing to hear something like THIS emerge from that scene. Subserviency plays a style of brutal death metal that's simultaneously highly technical and melodic, in such a unique way. This band is heavily influenced by highly renowned and talented greats in the underground death metal scene such as Defeated Sanity, Cryptopsy, Mortal Decay, Theurgy and even fucking Lykathea Aflame! That's right, we've got a band besides Bubba that resembles the sound of Lykathea Aflame in this day and age, which is unbelievable. The lengthy closing title track "Observing the Ancestral Twilight" brings the absolute pinnacle of that Lykathea Aflame influence to the table, with that intro, as well as the melodic guitar passages throughout the song to accompany all the chaotic drum parts. Towards the end of the song, there's some crazy sounding guitar sections that almost feel reminiscent of later-era Death or Barn to me. This song alone is so insanely well written and one hell of a way to end off such a superb EP. (REVIEW CONTINUED IN SLIDES, PLEASE KEEP READING THROUGH THEM)

Well, I guess everyone missed our headline. “Texas Middle Aged Men” just doesn’t have the same impact.

Seriously though, congrats to @subserviencybdm🤘🏻

EP REVIEW:

OBSERVING THE ANCESTRAL TWILIGHT BY SUBSERVIENCY
Release date: October 2nd, 2026
Favorite track: Seeking the Hidden Magicks

Holy shit, where can I even begin with this EP!? This is some of the best and craziest technical and progressive brutal death metal I have ever heard in my life! Subserviency is a technical brutal death metal band formed in 2024, hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas. Originally going by Artistic Defilement, they later changed their name to Subserviency in 2025. When you listen to the beginning of this EP, you truly do not know what to expect. The slow, beautiful guitar melodies in the intro truly catch your attention. It’s like walking through a beautiful, mystical world, but then BOOM! You’re suddenly and unexpectedly trapped in some crazy purgatory. The brutality is suddenly met with the melodies, creating an insane contrast between beauty and absolute fucking chaos. That contrast is one of the things that makes this release stand out so much. The riffs throughout this EP are absolutely ridiculous. There are so many technical and progressive elements packed into the songs, but somehow it never feels like they’re just throwing technicality at you for the sake of showing off. Everything feels purposeful. The songwriting constantly keeps you guessing, jumping between intricate, almost hypnotic passages and some of the most disgusting, crushing brutal death metal I’ve heard in a while. One moment you’re caught up in a beautiful melodic passage, and the next you’re getting completely annihilated by riffs and gutturals. This release is truly unlike anything I’ve heard. The best way I can describe it is prog-era Death meets Guttural Secrete, but even that doesn’t fully capture what they’re doing here. There’s something very atmospheric and almost surreal about the way the melodies are incorporated into the brutality. It gives the EP an identity of its own rather than sounding like another modern New Standard Elite release. (Review continues in next slide!)

I honestly did not know what to expect when I first listened, but needless to say, I am very fucking amazed by how phenomenal this EP is. There’s so much going on that I feel like
