A little shoutout to my coaches.

Sometimes that hour or hour and a half on the mat is the only time I’ve set aside entirely for myself that day.

So if I come rushing in, a little late, or slightly scatterbrained—please know I really, really want to be there.

Give me a minute. I’ll lock in.

Some days I show up at 100%. Some days just getting through the door is the win.

But I keep showing up.

Thank you to the coaches who understand that we’re not just martial artists walking onto the mat. We’re people carrying entire lives with us.

I appreciate you for making space for us to put it all down and train. #brazilianjiujitsu #jiujitsu #bjjlife #bjj #momslife @carlsongraciegrandrapids

Today was so much fun! Went to the NY Open, met one of my ALGN Athletes in person for the first time and actually got to coach him during his matches. Keith did amazing and was able to win Silver in the Adult division as he preps for Masters Worlds. I’m really excited to get him some programming for the next few weeks ahead of the event with the data we got today. Bailey looked amazing and won his division via footlock. Gabby medaled out to grab some points and decided to do the absolute where she had a really good match with Liz, and then a match with Larissa Dias that when I can get home and screen record some, was one of the most fun matches. Larissa was super kind and absolutely could have ripped Gabby in half like a mortal kombat fatality but instead actually played into some super technical exchanges that had them both laughing and it was so clear they love Jiu Jitsu and were enjoying their time playing against one another. Oh and I got to coach my friend Anthony because I don’t know how to not coach people if I think they need help and he did amazing! Life is so good, I love Jiu Jitsu, I love my friends, I love my dog, and I hope you had a good day too!

BJJ is evolving, and I think we need to pay attention to what we might be leaving behind.

The sport teaches us how to perform, compete, and win.

The martial art should also teach us discipline, humility, restraint, respect, responsibility, and how to hold power without abusing it.

Being technically good at jiu-jitsu doesn’t automatically make someone a good person.

If we’re getting better at winning but not better at how we treat each other, what exactly are we mastering? #bjj #jiujitsu #martialarts #bjjlife #growth
