"The Misting Gateway" - created by Site Design Group located at Mary Bartelme Park in Chicago's West Loop

Shot with Sony a6100 by @suededragon

Design Concept & Visual Form -

- Geometric Twist:

The gateway consists of five large, stainless steel structures that appear visually skewed and twisted.

- Industrial Nod:

The sharp angles and metallic finishes pay homage to the West Loop’s historic identity as an industrial warehouse district.

- Intimate Experience:

Positioned at the northwest entrance plaza, the structures frame a diagonal entry path that draws visitors directly into a light, vaporized cloud on hot summer days.

Eco-Friendly Water Engineering -

- Low-Flow Conservation:

Traditional city splash pads waste thousands of gallons of water. The gateway solves this by using small, high-pressure misting heads that consume less than 3 gallons of water per minute across active gates.

- Demand-Based Cycle:

The system is entirely on-demand. It only operates when a visitor presses one of two physical activation bollards.

- Alternating Sequence:

Once triggered, the fountain runs a programmed 3-minute sequence. It systematically moves the mist across the structures while keeping a maximum of two frames active at once. This saves roughly 1.13 million gallons of municipal water every single year.

High-Tech Infrastructure -

- Smog-Eating Pavers:

The gates sit on a specialized bed of white, permeable concrete pavers. Sunlight triggers a photocatalytic reaction within the concrete that physically breaks down local air pollutants and organic compounds.

- Stormwater Filtration:

The ground design prevents pooling water. Rain and mist runoff drain straight through the porous pavement joints, naturally infiltrating back into the local water table instead of straining Chicago's sewer lines."
