What have you been up to on the hottest May afternoon on record? I’ve been cutting up sweaters as it’s just too hot to do anything else. As many of you know, making rag rugs is one of my favorite things and anyone can do it. It’s easy and it’s fun. Last month I had the pleasure of teaching an elderly lady who has almost lost her sight and felt really depressed that she could no longer stitch or knit any more. And so I introduced her to rugmaking. I only had some quite dull sweaters to cut up at the time, but she was really thrilled to be able to complete, working by touch and with the little sight she has left, a doormat sized rug in a couple of weeks. So thrilled in fact, that she wants to do another, this time with some colour! So today I’ve chopped up 1/4 old blanket, 2 overwashed cashmere sweaters, some fleece and a very pilled acrylic sweater. And that, with an old coffee bean sack for a base, will make a splendid colourful, bigger rug.

All unwanted fabrics/garments, saving them from landfill, giving them new life. The ultimate sustainable textile technique.

I’m sharing some photos of rugs made by other rug makers, the last 2 we have sadly lost and are very much missed. They introduced me to rugmaking and were inspirational tutors and friends. Diane Cox from Cornwall and Heather Ritchie from Yorkshire. Heather’s rugs were always very detailed and told a story. So passionate about teaching was she that she founded Rug Aid in the Gambia teaching blind people to make rugs and thus provide themselves with an income. Rugmakers are wonderful people! *edit* no 3 made by @happyrugmaker (not sue dove!) and no 13 by @rachelharveyredwood ). Not Diane ..). My memory didn’t serve me well …. 🤦‍♀️ apologies ladies….

If you want to learn this heritage craft @knitchings runs regular workshops at her home in Surrey and I’m teaching a workshop on June 27th at @cowslipworkshops , Launceston, Cornwall.

Just a perfect afternoon spent in the amazing garden at @wick.farm near Langport, open today as part of the #ngsopengardens. Glorious colour and art everywhere you look, a feast for the eyes and a wealth of inspiration. On the hottest day of the year so far it all looked magnificent and the icing on the cake was chatting to kindred spirits @pennyhornelushlush (creative genius behind this magical place), and artists @lindagreen2 @suedove55 and Sarah @raggyroux

Wonderful things happen at Wick Farm…workshops, artist and crafters residencies, healing and creative events, retreats, the possibilities are endless. I came home with my head buzzing with ideas and full of excitement at the prospect of working alongside these wonderful women at this fabulous place. www.awakeningsatwick.com

Last week I spent a couple of days at the gorgeous @cowslipworkshops at the @curtainstocouture Small Beginnings, Great Expectations exhibition.
How wonderful to be there to experience the reactions of the visitors as they examined the reimagined baby clothes.
Different pieces spoke to different people. I watched people hug each other, reach for tissues and smile. So many emotional responses to this exhibition, happy and sad. And many many conversations, often people sharing stories they’d never shared before. It truly is a powerful exhibition.
It has been extended at @cowslipworkshops now until 21st April and then it moves to Bury St Edmunds (details at the end).
We’ll be posting updates for where it’s going after that on our account so keep watching.
And if you can please come and see it!

All artists are tagged except for Kate @k8c1962 and Alison Day.

What a lovely day at Cowslip Workshops today. The sun shone, well it did this morning anyway, this afternoon it was back to Cornish mizzle, but it didn’t dampen the spirits and a wonderful time was had by all making rag rug wreaths. Plenty of conversation and, of course, cake was involved, 4 rather bored but very well behaved dogs, and some lovely results achieved. All made using no longer wanted clothing and fabrics, creating a lovely decoration for the home that will last for many years. This was the first time I’ve taught at Cowslip since pre COVID days and it was lovely to be back doing what I love to do. We also managed to convince Annette that she looks amazing in a hat, and had a sneaky peek at Kate’s petticoat made from pillowcases and Sue’s new coat. This was the last ragrug workshop in 2025, looking forward to spreading more Rugmaking love in 2026. #ragrug #ruglove #sustainablecrafts #sustainablechristmas #womenworkingtogether #proddy #proddyrug #dogsofinstagram
