📝 New blog: Purpose, place and the missing plate

🌹 FFCC Chief Exec @suepr reflects on Labour Party Conference 2026 – and why a fairer, greener, healthier and more resilient food economy is critical to the government’s central ambition of growth.

⚖️ Over the course of the Conference, a theme emerged: we cannot rely on corporations to set their own guardrails. Regulating corporate power, devolving power to places and communities, and ensuring our everyday essentials work for the public interest and not the private interest can help build a more prosperous, resilient country.

🍏 It’s encouraging to see a government ready to challenge the status quo. But food is still not getting the attention it deserves. As Sue says, “The fact that our global and local food economies are both damaging the planet and its ecosystems, and the people in it, and increasingly precarious and vulnerable to global shocks, should put it front and centre of the whole cabinet.”

🚜 Are we really making progress when it comes to supporting more sustainable farming in the UK?

🌻 At Ark Summit 2026, former Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Rt Hon George Eustice, joined the conversation around the changing policy landscape for British farming.

📈 George points to the growing number of schemes that now encourage and reward farmers for delivering more than food production alone - from improving soils and habitats to supporting wider environmental outcomes.

❓But has that translated into enough meaningful progress?

➡️ Patrick Holden (@patrickholdensft @sustainablefoodtrust) raises the question of whether we have actually moved far enough, particularly when it comes to the growth and support of organic farming in the UK.

🌱 It’s an interesting exchange on where farming policy has come from, where it is heading and whether the current approach is delivering what we need from our food and farming system.

💭 Let us know your thoughts - are we making progress?

🔥 Some excellent points made by Derek Walker, the @futuregencymru Commissioner for Wales yesterday at the @afoodfestival Conference.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 It's an exciting time for food policy in Wales, with a National Food Strategy in the works – and an Expert Working Group announced this week to help shape it (members include our Chief Exec @suepr).

💯 As Derek says, fixing food has the potential to fix Wales' biggest challenges – from health and environment to a fairer, more resilient economy. And citizens must be involved throughout.

👀 All eyes on Wales as the nation embarks on these ambitious new plans.

Thank you for helping shape the future of food and national resilience 💚

The UK’s first Conference on Food & National Security brought together an incredible community of leaders from farming, food, defence, government, finance, academia and industry.

A day of big conversations, new connections and practical ideas centred around one question: How do we build a more resilient homeland through food, farming and nature?

The key messages throughout the day were:

🔸 Resilience must replace efficiency as an organising principle. We need to think beyond ‘just-in-time’ supply chains and build ‘just-in-case’ value networks that are better equipped to withstand disruption.

🔸 Nature and agroecology are strategic defence assets. Healthy soils, biodiversity and farming systems that work with nature can strengthen food security while reducing our reliance on imported inputs and fossil fuels.

🔸 The ‘missing middle’ matters. Regional processing, storage, distribution and retail infrastructure all have an important role to play in rebuilding resilient, place-based food economies.

🔸 And perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to act is now. Food, farming and nature deserve a central place within the UK’s resilience and national security strategy.

🙏🏼 A huge thank you to every speaker, delegate and partner who joined us, and to our sponsors @savills / @savillsrural, @howdenrural, @saffery_uk and @farmgatepodcast for supporting the conference and helping make the day possible.

This is just the beginning - we can’t wait to share the full report, session insights and what’s next. We will also use the report to influence government and the corridors of power, ensuring the conversation and impact continue.

We hope you enjoy the photos, just some of our favourite moments from the day 📸

🎗Out now: Our Annual Report 25-26

💥 From a groundbreaking programme of citizen engagement to the publication of the Land Use Framework, after years of advocacy, it’s been an eventful year for FFCC.

🌱 As our Chair Martin Nye says, “The scaffolding of change is now in place… But frameworks alone do not feed a family, restore a river or make a farm resilient – only effective delivery does. The task of the next three years is harder, and matters more… That is where we will put our energy.”

🧩 This year, as we embark on an ambitious new strategy, we are shifting our focus to how to move from policy intentions to real impact on people’s everyday lives.

🌽 Ahead of next week’s Conference on Food and National Security, here is Lt Gen Richard Nugee CB CVO CBE on stage at the Ark Summit highlighting the importance of our food system as a fundamental part of the UK’s national security.

Food and national security are intrinsically linked. From our reliance on imported fertilisers, pesticides, machinery parts and energy, to volatile global markets and geopolitical instability, there are vulnerabilities throughout our food system that can have very real consequences here in the UK.

In this reel, Richard Nugee highlights why we need to be taking food security seriously as part of the wider national security conversation - and why understanding where our dependencies lie is so important when it comes to building a more resilient UK food system.

Richard makes some important points. Watch the reel to hear more.

➡️ You’ll be seeing more of Richard at the Conference of Food and National Security 2026 on the 8th September in London. You can read the agenda and add yourself to the waiting list via the link in our bio 🔗

🌟 Good opportunity alert!

The UK Government has announced a new Youth Climate and Nature Panel, which will eventually bring together young people aged 16-25 from across the UK to help shape climate and nature policy. The first round of applications is currently open for 16-18-year-olds, with further opportunities for those aged 19-25 expected to follow.

We’ll keep Em Gen members updated as soon as we hear more. In the meantime, if you’re 16-18 and passionate about climate, nature and the future of our food system, we’d encourage you to take a look at this opportunity and share widely.

🚜 It’s #Farm24 - one of the biggest online farming campaigns of the year run by @farmersguardian, celebrating the people, places and practices that keep our food system going.

🌍 While Farm24 shines a spotlight on British agriculture, its message reaches far beyond our phones, inspiring conversations around farming, food and the future of our landscapes.

🦋 At Ark, we’re proud to champion farmers who are building resilient businesses through regenerative and organic farming, nature-friendly practices, and innovative approaches that support healthy soils, thriving ecosystems and better food systems.

💚 Farm24 is a reminder that farming is about so much more than producing food. It’s about caring for the land, supporting rural communities and creating a more sustainable future for generations to come.

🥳 Happy Farm24!

🗣️“Let’s start talking much more seriously about the precautionary principle, the polluter paying and the lobbyists”

🏡Our Chief Exec @suepr talking at @cpre’s Land Use Conference earlier this summer about why we need to be having much more honest conversations about how corporate power in land really works.

🧩 While vested interests want to work in silos and maintain the status quo, citizens know how systems work, in place, better than anyone else. Involving them can lead to the outcomes politicians and communities want to see.
