Margaret Braun is one of those artists who many of us can trace our own artistic awakenings back to.

She changed the way we viewed our own art form, if we’d even been thinking of cake that way, in the time before we crossed paths with her work.

Margaret gave us permission to step into the title of artist, to explore our own creative voices through the medium of sugar, and to take our work as seriously as any other artist takes theirs.

Since her period of working in sugar, Margaret has shifted into other media: porcelain, oils, graphite, all while maintaining and deepening her unique artistic perspective.

We are welcoming her into the Cake Circle for a conversation about how she transformed our perspectives on cake as art, how her relationship unfolded with sugar as an artistic medium, and what has led her to explore new media as she continues to evolve as an artist.

Planning a wedding in 3 months is, to say the least, ambitious. But for all the wedding content I’ve consumed, I somehow didn’t think it would be that big of a deal. Save the dates were texted, I made the invitations by hand, which arrived in people’s mailboxes just a month before the wedding.

My perfect dress was bought just 2 days before the wedding. I tried it on, hoping the 1 of 2 sizes they had available in store would fit me. When it zipped up perfectly, I instantly burst into tears in the Margiela dressing room, and Patrice bought it for me on the spot — just 30 minutes before we went to the Chinese wedding banquet my parents threw us. Patrice’s suit had been picked up from the tailor just the day before. We really were cutting it close, but I feel like the power of our cavaliereness, the trust we had in our taste, and that we were making all the right decisions (even if they were extremely last-minute) really, really held us together (also Joe, very physically held us together in wedding planning madness).

The venue for our welcome party never quite materialized, so at the last minute, we threw it outside the Standard at their soda shop popup, taking it as a sign that their outdoor rug happened to be the exact same bright blue marine carpeting we have in the Big in Japan office.

The day itself was, of course, so sooo fast. I knew it would be, but it still felt impossibly short. We began the day early, getting married at the New York courthouse with our parents as witnesses, and stepped out to all of our friends. We walked the short distance to Chinatown, taking pictures on the way, and had a big brunch at the upstairs level of Dim Sum A Go Go, where we read our vows to each other and watched as all our closest family and friends came together to meet and eat for the first time. (cont. in comments 💕)
