POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Last month I had the esteemed pleasure of meeting and sharing sacred space with Dr. Shafia Monroe - THEE Queen Mother of Black American midwifery and birthwork - as she celebrated the release of her new book, “Mothering the Mother: African American Postpartum Traditions, Recipes, and Healing.”

At the beginning of her book, she lovingly scribed “A Love Letter to Black Mothers”. And as per usual, all I could think about was spirals.

Because time is a spiral 🌀

So today - on this very significant day to my personal lore - I’m sharing, “A Love Letter to my Self… 10 Years Later”.

Being able to sit at the feet of an elder who has walked these waters for over 50 years - and to be surrounded by so many others in that mosque whose paths somehow spiraled into that same sacred moment - filled me not only with gratitude, but with deep pride for the younger version of me.

The one who didn’t know what was waiting on the other side of the dark… but somehow still led with curiosity, even through grief, and reached for the light.

The same light I now get to bask in.

Thank you Mama @shafiamonroe for all you are and the invaluable wisdom you’ve poured into this book. I give my deepest thanks to your elders and to the Granny Midwives (hidden figures to sooo much ancestral brilliance) as well. It’s already become a tool - a “birthworker bible”, as @erykahbadu so beautifully stated - that I use daily.

P.S. I’m still very tickled and very thankful that somehow I got the last book of the night. God is funny that way.

- Signed “a very blessed woman” 😉

Such an honor and privilege to attend QUEEN MOTHER @shafiamonroe ‘s Midwives gathering & book signing. Truly awe-inspiring. The setting was exquisite, and I was surrounded by so many beautiful sisters & healers —pure magic. So blessed, this pregnancy journey has been deeply enlightening 🙏🏾✨ We are the original & we set the standard. Honoring the continuation of life, even through death. A powerful reminder of the importance of the entire village, in totality. A vital remembrance and a joyous celebration of life. If everyone could immerse themselves in these teachings… please do. Submerge yourself in her book & support these wise teachings and ancient traditions. ✨
