If you, like me, lived through the aughts, you’ll never forget 2006. The year was prolific for minting cultural icons: it’s when Taylor Swift released her debut album, The Real Housewives dropped its first season, everyone was watching “High School Musical” for the first time, and yes, Popsugar was born. To celebrate the milestone, we threw an epic 2️⃣0️⃣th birthday party to go alongside our Aughts Effect package. The theme: elevated Y2K. The vibes: nostalgic. (Every guest delivered and then some.) 🦋✨💎 When @lisapopsugar founded this special little corner of the internet two decades ago, it was to create a “safe space” for fans of pop culture, she recently told me. At the time, the only celebrity blogs out there were snarky and filled with shame-y paparazzi fodder. Didn’t get nearly as many film photos as I wanted at Popsugar’s 20th birthday bash cause I was having too much fun!!!!! We had never thrown an editorial event before and I learned a lot through the process, mostly that any Y2K-themed party at @thestandardeastvillage’s penthouse is going to turn out pretty amazing. If you know me, you know I love a birthday. This one might be the biggest blowout yet: 20 years of Popsugar, a brand that’s defined and endured culture for two decades against all odds. To mark the milestone we’re celebrating AT THE MALL (!) with a handful of icons reminding us it’s never too late to reinvent yourself. This project has been months in the making (or as @lenakfelton says, “a 9-month pregnancy for real”) and it’s finally here. One virtual mall, four cover stories, dozens of stories that illustrate just how much the aughts have impacted culture today. Geeking out at this incredible team who made it all happen. The first time I dreamt of a mall shoot was back in 2021. 5 years later, during an interview for my current position at Popsugar, I told our Editor-in-Chief @castanonk that I’d love to do a mall shoot someday soon — not realizing that she too was wanting to do a mall shoot, as well. And so shortly thereafter, the mall shoot of my dreams came to fruition as a celebration of @Popsugar turning 20 this year via “The Aughts Effect” 🤯🙂‍↕️🎂🛍️ While it was an ambitious creative feat, it has been well worth the satisfaction of seeing it all brought to life 🥹 My mall-obsessed teenage self would be ecstatic to see this project today — doing it for her 👧🏻 Thank you to the incredibly talented team who worked so hard on every aspect of The Aughts Effect - what a pleasure it has been, truly!!
