There’s something magical about the way the light hits this place

Sunlight House on Quay Street has been watching over the city since 1932. Designed and developed by the brilliant (and slightly larger-than-life) Joseph Sunlight, this Grade II listed Art Deco beauty was Manchester’s tallest office building when it was completed — and claimed as Northern England’s first true skyscraper

Joseph (born Joseph Zchovsky in Belarus) was inspired by the soaring commercial towers of New York and Chicago. He originally dreamed of something much taller, but the finished 14-storey building, clad in Portland stone with its distinctive turrets, dormers and mansard roof, still became an instant landmark. Nearly a century later, after careful restoration, it continues to stand proud in the heart of the city

One of the things I love most about photographing Manchester is discovering the stories hidden behind its architecture. Every building has a past, and few tell it quite as well as Sunlight House.

Completed in 1932, Sunlight House was commissioned by Lever Brothers, the company behind Sunlight Soap, and designed by architect Joseph Sunlight, whose name the building proudly carries. Built in the striking Art Deco style, its clean vertical lines, ornate detailing and distinctive tower made it one of Manchester’s most ambitious office buildings of the time.

Standing at 14 storeys, it was among the city’s tallest buildings when it opened, offering something almost unheard of in Manchester during the early 1930s. It even featured high speed lifts, air conditioning in selected offices, and luxurious interiors, making it one of the most modern commercial buildings in Britain. Businesses were drawn to its prestige, and for decades it remained one of Manchester’s most sought after business addresses.

There’s also a fascinating piece of local folklore attached to it. During construction, there were plans for the building to be even taller, but concerns were raised that its height could interfere with aircraft approaching nearby Barton Aerodrome. Whether entirely true or not, it’s a story that’s become part of Manchester’s rich architectural history.

Nearly a century later, Sunlight House still commands attention. Framed by the surrounding streets, its elegant tower rises above the city as a reminder of Manchester’s ambition during the interwar years. Sometimes all it takes is looking up to appreciate just how much history is built into the skyline.
