This new public artwork for the City of Austin was photographed at night using the least expected lighting tool in my kit: my four-year-old’s Elsa wand.

At night, Sun McColgin’s sculpture shifts into something moody and arresting, with pool floodlights catching the edges of its waves. In daylight, its bright blues and the wildlife mosaics by Ryah Christensen are vivid and inviting.

What you’re not seeing: me aggressively light-painting the scene with that same princess wand while a group of tennis players tried to make sense of it.

The tile making workshops at Morton Mandan Public Library and D & N Cinematics generated many wonderful stories and tiles for Sun’s and my public art sculpture, “Hoodoo Herd,” to be completed in the Badlands of Medora spring of 2027. If you would like to hear the Tile makers’ stories please click the link in my Instagram bio. Thank you, Morton Mandan public library and D&N cinematics for hosting me and sharing your community. #ryahchristensenart #sunmccolginart #hoodooherd
