An artist doesn’t always envision the final piece and then set forth to make every stroke just perfect until it matches the mental image. More often, there isn’t a visual direction, but more of a feeling…a sensation to somehow translate from the soul to the canvas.
.
That’s how I felt about these envelopes I did for the #prettymailtribe envelope exchange with @inkmethis and @suzcunningham last month. I knew I wanted an ethereal experience when viewing the Chinese watercolor roses—like they were almost a scent you could inhale. I wanted the happy mail to look like it blew into the mailbox on a breeze and just landed there, hoping to be picked up and delight the recipient before floating away somewhere else.

I also didn’t want it to look too elementary, as are my novice watercolor painting skills. So I put just a rose or two or three, and then let my pointed pen, a tool with which I am much more comfortable, gradually add in an elegant wildness that made the art look like I knew what I was doing while still being discovered in the wild.
.
In the end, I was pleasured by the art, but not beholden to it yet. So I added a touch of shimmer from @thecreativekinds La Riviera set, and all at once my breath was taken, and I knew the envelope was complete.
.
This is art. Braving a daring creative adventure armed with nothing but a few tools and a million hours of honing a skill or two, having no idea of where you will end, how it will look, whether it will be filled with mistakes or whether anyone (or even you) will like what you make of it. This is also life.
.
This adventure took me somewhere entirely new. It gave me fresh hope. May it delight the recipients like @sunnytoo also.
.
(Instead of posting the whole project all at once, I am going to make my slightly boring IG feed get refreshed with a steady drop of rose petals over a few days. I hope you won’t mind.)

I haven’t done an envelope exchange in a looooong time. So when I got an email from @inkmethis about joining hers I jumped on it. It’s spring so I figured a hot pink envelope in someone’s mailbox would be a welcome sight 🌺
