Nolan Ryan, Backup Catchers & The Books That Stole My Baseball Heart | Tim Brown | Ep 247

Mike will fight you on it: the toughest job in sports isn't quarterback, it's catcher — for everything you have to know. Tim Brown backs him up on the mental load behind the plate.

⛳ Thursday, October 15. Golf Club of Dallas. Come play.

The 27th Annual Heart of Gold Foundation Golf Tournament sends about 120 cardiac kids to Camp Moss every summer — a week where children with transplants and half-hearts get to do the zip line like everybody else, with an ICU on site in case.

Knox Fitzpatrick and Mark Leach told us the whole story on Ep 260, including how a kid selling raffle tickets in a Greenville Avenue bar in 1999 started all of it.

📅 Oct. 15 — check-in 10:30 a.m.
📍 2200 W. Redbird Ln.
💵 $1,000 a team — million-dollar shootout, Tex-Mex buffet

⚾ Ep 258 — “Losing Glove Battles, Five AL West Teams & Life After Baseball” with Mark McLemore.

He played for every team in the AL West. Got released by the two worst clubs in baseball six months apart, decided he didn’t believe them, and went to Baltimore and rebuilt the whole thing.

In here: Johnny Oates and Doug Melvin, the ‘96 Rangers getting back together thirty years later with all the stories grown two sizes, why Cal Ripken is actually hilarious and Billy’s funnier, and the day a ground ball at third knocked the glove clean off his hand into left field.

Also — he’s done. Doesn’t follow the Rangers, doesn’t miss broadcasting, flies drones and hangs out with his granddaughter. And he’s at peace with it.

Out now wherever y’all listen. 🎧

We love Dudley’s. We think y’all will too. 🤠
Two Texas locations, wall-to-wall sports, and food that’s better than it has any right to be at a sports bar.

🎙️ Ep 252 — “Rangers Reality Check, Rush Redemption & Madonna Confessions” with Mac Engel.

Mac came in swinging with questions for Mike, stuck around for a Rangers autopsy, and closed by running the Proust questionnaire on him. Hero of fiction: Popeye. You’ll want to hear the rest.

Out now wherever you listen. 🎧 The Engel Angle lives at stolenwatermedia.com.

🍔 Ep 251 — “Burgers, Beets, and Buffett: Ranking Dallas’s Best Burgers” with Evan Grant and Sarah Blaskovich.

The DMN’s food writer and its Rangers insider ate their way through this city and lived to rank it. Goodwin’s, NADC, Sky Rocket, the chopped cheese at Herbie’s, and one phone call about a veggie burger that went sideways.

Stick around for Jimmy Buffett vs. Springsteen and Evan on Kumar Rocker.

Out now wherever y’all listen. 🎧

Fantasy Football Draft Party, Lobster Fest & Life at Dudley's with Chef Eric | YDC Ep 246

Chef Eric breaks down the Dudley's pork chop in full — apple-cider brine, pecan and post oak on the wood-fire grill, brussels with bacon and honey mustard, brandy peppercorn jus. "Super 'Murica," and it's on the menu at Dudley's.

👉 SWIPE RIGHT for Izze’s next show 👉

She’s at Geraldine’s in Austin on Saturday, August 30 with her Texas trio — and if y’all go, ask her for some Steely Dan. She said she’d play it.

Because that’s how Episode 249 happened. Mike was flitting around the internet, found a musician half his age breaking down a Steely Dan record, and walked straight into the room to say get her on the show. “Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell & The Art of Musical Genius” is out now.

Izze has broken down every Steely Dan album at this point — the Aja one alone is pushing half a million views — and she came at it like a musician, not a collector. Black Cow. The friction the ‘70s gave those two. Why coming back after a twenty-year hiatus and still landing it is the whole argument. Joni’s tunings. Amy Winehouse never singing a song the same way twice.

Her own record, QUESTIONS, is out too — jazz and soul, and worth your afternoon.
