Another song that I first heard in 1980 on an Art Center mixtape was “Isolation” by Joy Division.

Oh, how I hated this song. The music was weird, but what really bothered me was the singer. I found him intensely irritating.

Yeah, I changed my mind about that fairly quickly. You could say that I’ve been kind of a fan of Joy Division for a long time now. I still think “Isolation” is a very weird song, but only in the best possible ways.

By the way, the version of the song you hear in this post is a live recording, and not the Closer studio recording I first heard on the mixtape. Odd that I couldn’t find the studio version on IG, but them’s the breaks.

I wish I could remember more songs from that 1980 mixtape. But in truth, I don’t even know whose tape it was. It might have been Joe’s, but there certainly could have been other culprits among our classmates. Still, whoever made it, it was Joe who had the patience to tell me more about the music and suggest similar bands to check out. Thanks, Joe, for that and so much else.

Tonight, Joe is in Philadelphia playing with Jerry Busher and Yanni Papadopoulos (another old friend and musical guide) at Khyber Pass Pub, along with the outstanding Sun Within. Applied Knowledge is going to open the show. I hope you will be there!
