“Write.” 📓

That’s what a high school teacher told April Pouchie, after putting a blank composition notebook on her desk. She’d been close to leaving school without graduating. That teacher paid her college application fees and drove her to an admissions interview.

The road from there took twenty years and included the U.S. Army, cosmetology, kitchens, a porter job on @amtrak, and a bachelor’s degree finally finished in 2025 on the Dean’s List, while raising two children alone.

This fall she begins her Master of Social Work at Rutgers, focused on gerontology. She wants to be a hospice and palliative care social worker — the person in the room who refuses to give up on you.

April is our Fall 2026 First-Generation Graduate Student Scholarship recipient. Link in bio to read her essay in full. 💙

From Empire State University graduate to entrepreneur and community builder. ❤️

Thank you, Empire State University, for highlighting my journey and the work we’re doing through Latinas Evolving LLC!

As a proud 2020 graduate, it means so much to have my alma mater recognize my journey and the impact we’re making in our communities.

From navigating the corporate world to building something of my own, one thing has remained consistent: my passion for connecting people, creating opportunities, and making a difference.

I’ve always believed that success isn’t just about what we accomplish for ourselves, but how we use our experiences, relationships, and knowledge to open doors for others.

Grateful for the recognition and proud to be part of the Empire State University alumni community!

The evolving never stops! ✨

Never know who you’ll bump into @fotocarenyc for a @fujifilmx_us special cleaning day.

When I was in college I remember meeting @ronhaviv_vii who came to share the incredibly meaningful work he was creating with our class @sunyempire my photography professor, Mel Rosenthal often brought in inspiring photographers for us to learn from. I was deeply moved by Ron’s passion and commitment to storytelling.

@curtiswillocks @fitnyc is so fortunate to have a professor as passionate as you. I’m forever grateful to call you former professor of mine and friend.

Thank you @Fotocare for having such an incredible sales team who truly go above and beyond for their clients. You guys are THE BEST!!!

Attending the reception celebrating @somos_inc 40th Anniversary was truly an honor and a powerful reminder of the impact of Latino leadership and advocacy.
I was proud to be in attendance representing @fitnyc @fit_bakerschool @suny and the Hispanic Leadership Institute (HLI) and grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many inspiring leaders and changemakers.

It was especially an honor to meet @suny Trustee @marcoscrespo85 and to attend alongside my fellow HLI Fellow, @mariposaroja55 @sunyempire.

Surrounded by hundreds of Latinos gathered to celebrate four decades of @somos_inc legacy, leadership, and impact, the evening was filled with pride, community, and anticipation for what lies ahead.

Many of us are already looking forward to SOMOS in Puerto Rico this November and continuing to celebrate the power of our community and the importance of Latino solidarity.

Here’s to 40 years of @somos_inc - and to many more years of making a difference! 🇵🇷🇺🇸

I’m grateful to be part of SUNY Empire’s How U Do U campaign.

This experience gave me the chance to reflect on my journey, the people who shaped me, and the challenges that brought me here.

Standing in my mother’s salon, holding her picture, and sharing her story meant more than words can express. Her legacy continues to guide me in everything I do. Being able to capture a part of my story in the place where she built her own legacy is something I’ll never take for granted.

The Boys & Girls Club is also a big part of my story. Basketball, mentoring, and giving back to young people have helped shape who I am and continue to remind me of the purpose behind everything I do.

Education, community, faith, and the people who have poured into me have all played a role in who I am becoming. I’m still growing, learning, and striving to become the person God has called me to be.

Thank you to SUNY Empire for giving me the opportunity to share my story and honor my mother’s legacy.

The interview and full story will be coming soon.

This is my journey. This is my purpose. This is how I do university. ❤️
