Clinical pearl for my fellow eye doctors: GLP-1 drugs are now part of the eye exam. Europe's EMA concluded in 2025 that NAION is a very rare side effect of semaglutide, up to about 1 in 10,000 patients a year, with large studies showing roughly a two-fold relative increase in type 2 diabetes. The first signal was louder: Hathaway et al. reported hazard ratios of 4.28 in diabetes and 7.64 in obesity, in a referral population. The absolute risk stays small, but the stakes are not: sudden, painless, permanent vision loss. Document the disc before they start, flag the crowded disc at risk, and counsel every patient: sudden vision loss means a same-day exam, and confirmed NAION means stopping the drug. Are you asking about GLP-1s in your history yet?

New series 🔓 Part 1
Spinning Dancer Optical Illusion: Which Way Is She Spinning? 💃🏼

This famous optical illusion can look like she’s rotating clockwise OR counterclockwise, and she can reverse direction while you watch. It’s called bistable perception: the silhouette has no depth cues, so your brain picks a spin direction and can flip between the two. About 2 in 3 people see clockwise first.

Stare at her feet for a few seconds to make her switch directions.

Which way did you see first? Let me know below.

Anne Hathaway has revealed she lived with an early-onset cataract for a decade, leaving her "basically legally blind" in her left eye from age 30 to 40.

Speaking on the New York Times' Popcast in April, the actress said she "didn't realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum" following surgery.

Her case underscores a clinical reality: cataracts can develop decades before the typical age range, and patients often underreport gradual vision loss. Swipe for the full breakdown.

Wear the fun contacts. Just make sure they’re legitimate, prescribed, and properly fitted to YOUR eyes.

Before buying colored or Halloween contact lenses, remember: contacts are medical devices, even if you have perfect vision.
