I am 23 years old and I live in a van.

It's a long story--I went from graduating from college to working my old park maintenance job and sleeping in a busted Ford Fiesta. The car was falling apart; I had to crawl underneath the frame to hook bungee cords and my old rock climbing carabiners to a collapsed resonator pipe, as well as the rear bumper. It would shake and rattle to the point where I had to stop using the highway. The heater broke during the winter.

I was living in the car when this happened, not out of necessity or family problems, but of choice--I had to get away from those walls, the constant stand-still life I'd fallen in. Over the summer, I took out the backseats and put in a cot mattress expanding to the trunk, as well as a plastic dresser. I kept warm through a fleece liner and a 0-degree sleeping bag. It was always a dream of mine to live on the road, as though from a Kerouac novel.

In February, I was desperate and bought the first van I found on Facebook Market with the disillusion I would be able to fix it up, like Arnie from Stephen King's "Christine," but I had no mechanical knowledge. The seller told me the heater was the only essential thing not working, but I was left with busted breaks and a shop telling me it would burn on fire. I sold the van for a near $2000 less than what I paid, but I felt it was more truthful to the condition and listed all the problems to the buyer.

The whole situation with the van made me open my eyes and I ended up finding a position with Otsego Media--another story--where I filmed and edited videos showcasing local events and businesses. It is a small film studio responsible for movies like "Ouija Witch" and "Popeye the Slayer Man"--my boss got me a role on the sequel to the latter as the boom guy. Over the whole course of filming, I continued to sleep in the Fiesta.

My inspection was near due at the beginning of summer. The Fiesta wouldn't pass--I had enough money for a cheap vehicle, but hadn't found anything and went back to my position at Gilbert Lake out of the fear of not having a car. I found her on the first day.

Some voices become part of our lives. They accompany our memories, define moments in time, and remind us of the emotional power of music. For generations of R&B listeners, 2-time Grammy Award nominee Freddie Jackson was one of those voices.

Freddie's passing on October 5, 2026, prompted me to reflect on his musical legacy and my own experiences interviewing him at two different points in my career.

Those experiences also reminded me that a person's legacy extends beyond professional accomplishments. It can be reflected in the opportunities they create for others, the encouragement they offer, and the stories they share.

My first interview with Freddie took place in the early 1990s, when I served as Arts & Features Editor of "Cardinal Points", the student newspaper at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

During that interview, Freddie told me directly that he especially wanted to make time for me as a student journalist. He explained that he viewed such opportunities as a way to give back by supporting students and people at the beginning of their careers.

In 2017, I had the opportunity to interview Freddie again, this time for "Shefik presents Invocation", the nationally syndicated radio show and internationally distributed video series I hosted and executive-produced.

I did not know then how meaningful that interview would become as part of the historical record surrounding Freddie's life and legacy.

On October 6, 2026, The St. Louis American published Kenya Vaughn's article, "Chart-topping R&B balladeer Freddie Jackson dies at 70", which referenced my 2017 interview with Freddie for "Shefik presents Invocation".

As I reflect on his life, I am reminded that the work of preserving meaningful stories never truly ends. We carry those stories forward, ensuring that the people who shaped our lives and culture are not forgotten.
