PROXIMITY_rehearsal continuum

The final act in my artist in residency at ArtLab Harvard University. Thank you to Grisha Coleman for articulating the intentionality of the SUPA System through a different form of visual expression.

“Proximity,” choreographed by Grisha Coleman and curated by Joseph Zeal-Henry, questions our proximity to our diverted shared origins and their reconciliation as an opportunity for liberation through collective imagination.

“Proximity” utilises Black British music as a catalyst for connection between disparate geographies and forms of practice. In this context, sound works to mediate the world of movement and spatial design, creating a common ground for the formation of new narratives within the conception of the Black Atlantic.

Celebrating the intricate ties between diasporic communities in Britain, the United States, and beyond, the choreography offers a translation of gesture that connects unacknowledged histories through the movement of synchronized bodies.

When SUPA System went to @exitgalleries . Amazing to see how it was able to hold the space and become focal point for convening people.

Incredible to witness the different communities that showed up; the skaters, b-boys, parkour, sneaker heads, vinyl lovers, arts and of course LA songwriters. Still not found anything better than music as common ground, especially in city like Boston which seems to be culture of sub-cultures all trying to find space.

Making the @supa_system

Taking a playful and critical approach to the idea of infrastructure, the installation facilitates collaboration and exchange with other people.

I fabricated the speakers using a range of low-fi and high tech techniques, including CNC-ing the speaker box baffles with support by @jeandashpaul , the utilitarian design of the object downplays authorship, thereby inviting others to creatively engage with the project on their own terms.
