Evening collection selection! Superior Foes of Spider-Man #17 (January 2015) by Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber. Cover by Lieber! Final issue! As we saw at the end of last ish, Boomerang uses Chameleon tech to appear just like the Mets’ star pitcher—so he could relive his dream of being an MLB ballplayer again. He does, and he’s awesome! He calls his lady love from throughout the series, whom he double-crossed to get away from a Bullseye robot—and tells her he’s sorry…and how he stole the painting of Dr. Doom. But—it turns out this chick has been an in-disguise Felicia Hardy/Black Cat the whole time. She steals the painting from Boomy’s apartment. Also! The Owl sees through Boomy’s disguise and has wagered huge amounts on Boomy losing the game—He tells Boomy, “throw the game or I’ll kill you”—but Boomy doesn’t—fade to black! Does he survive? We see him at the end of the issue telling this whole story to Peter Parker—so either he DID survive—or the whole thing was a shaggy dog tale! We learn that the Shocker, with Silvermane’s head in tow, takes down the Punisher in a Shockermobile and takes over the Maggia! And the Beetle and Overdrive think they have the painting—but it’s a counterfeit—which Dr. Doom intercepts and demands returned And Speed Deom wins a lucrative lawsuit against Iron Fist! The various members of the 6 all betray each other by trying to recruit a more powerful/respected villain to help them. Evening collection selection! Superior Foes of Spider-Man #14 (September 2014) by Nick Spencer, Steve Lieber, and Rich Ellis. Cover by Kris Anka! At their backup HQ, Overdrive tells his Sinister Six teammates about his origin story—how he got his power and how he dreamed of being a superhero. He also tells them of how his fancy driving turned on the new Beetle (Janice Lincoln) and how the two of them did it in his souped up car. Is this true or is he just bragging? Even in the comic, it’s clear that she didn’t enjoy the encounter and didn’t want to take things any further. Speed Demon then hits on Janice—with no luck. Then, Speed Demon recalls/relates how he stole a dog but then gave it to a young girl in need. Then…the team starts badmouthing ex-teammate the Shocker. What they don’t know is that Shocker fled to the same HQ with the head of cyborg Silvermane that he found/stole—and they are listening to the badmouthing. Shocker gets mad…and Silvermane incites him…and he emerges from hiding to blast his former buddies! He declares himself the new boss! The 10 villains that expanded the Sinister Six to 16 are arrested by the cops, but Boomy and crew escape to their safe house. Chameleon is mad—as he realizes it was Hammerhead who hired the 6 to steal the painting and attack his base. Now—he tells Hammerhead the same thing (Hammy had hired the remaining members of Fred’s Sinister Six to kidnap Fred and bring him the painting). Hammy buys it…and Fred and the remaining 5…plus 10 more villains (the Sinister Sixteen)…go after the Chameleon to get the painting. Chammy disguises himself as Mirage to infiltrate the group—but Fred recognizes him and clocks him! Meanwhile, Hydro-Man tells Hammy—that the Shocker has Silvermane’s head. Evening collection selection! Superior Foes of Spider-Man #9 (April 2014) by Nick Spencer, Steve Lieber and Rich Ellis Cover by Lieber. Bullseye is shooting for our guy Boomerang/Fred Meyers. But Fred’s a little more competent than people think, and he manages to not get killed! He and his new girlfriend are tied up though..and the Owl demands his portrait of Dr. Doom back! Fred insists that it wasn’t him who stole it! It was the Chameleon dressed up as him…and he can prove it, if Owl doesn’t kill him! (Owl hired Bullseye—or a robot version of him!). He tracks down Chammy—reveals that Chammy DOES have the painting (Fred gave it to him—after stealing it for him)—and tricks Chammy into revealing that he can make himself look exactly like Fred. Owl is ready to kill Chammy! Fred’s girlfriend remains in his clutches! Meanwhile, Hydro-Man discovers Shocker with Silverman’s head in his possession. Hydro-Man thinks Shocker can get money and power with it—but Shocker just wants to keep his head down and earn a decent living through crime! Evening collection selection! Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #12 (July 2014) by Kevin Shinick, Marco Checchetto, Ron Frenz, Sal Buscema. Cover by Paolo Rivera! We continue to get untold backstory about the relationship of Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus/Superior Spidey and Norman Osborn/Green Goblin. Having lost his own love/wife, Norm decided to give Otto (a supposed “friend”) a similar experience by running his ex-fiancee off the road and then infecting her with a lethal virus. The two men also argue and feud over which is the superior way to kill Spidey and/or live in the world, science vs. spirit (or some such). When Mary Alice dies, Otto pummels and nearly kills Norm—but Spidey is on his way there and Otto has to flee. Otto goes to Norm’s house and plans to kill him, but Norm is long gone…and then thought dead. Otto swears he will kill Spidey before Norm—and tries for many years, until (kind of) succeeding and replacing him in Peter Parker’s body as the Superior Spidey. But now Nom has (nearly?) defeated him even in that body. But Otto rushes off to prove Norm wrong! The final issue of the series! Evening collection selection! Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #11 (June 2014) by Kevin Shinick, Marco Checchetto, Ron Frenz, Sal Buscema. Cover by Paolo Rivera! Superior Spidey (Doc Ock’s brain in Peter Parker’s bod) has been defeated by Green Goblin/Norman Osborn. He and Spider-Man 2099 are captured by Spider-Slayers and Otto reminisces about his time as “friend” of Norman. Because they both hated Spidey, they struck up a relationship…and fought over what was the best way to defeat Spidey, “soul or science” and over which one of them was Spidey’s greatest villain. In the end, they did work together and even became “friends” but Gobby was a loon and so he wanted his friend “Otto” to know what he felt when his wife Emily died. Gobby kidnaps Otto’s ex-girlfriend Mary Alice, runs her car off the road and infects her with a lethal virus. To be continued! It turns out they are being controlled by the Green Goblin (Norman Osborn!), as is much of Ock’s tech! They are losing—but Ock finally agrees to use his failsafe and destroy his hideout and his henchmen by flooding the whole place. He does! And wins this battle, barely. But he feels duped, and etc…and he was. See the main Superior series!
